Patty Middleton MSc / UKCP Accredited
My name is Patty and I am a humanistic and integrative counsellor and psychotherapist.
I started my journey to becoming a counsellor due to my very first session of counselling. I remember leaving that session and wanting to share my experience with everyone! how wonderful it was to be heard and understood, yet also frightening to be sharing my emotions with someone when I had spent so long hiding them away.
I practice from the integrative modality which means I use different theories to support my approach addressing problematic thoughts or challenging emotions. My preferred theories look at understanding why we respond to certain situations in the ways that we do, ultimately recognising that many of our adult responses are formed due to experiences in our childhood. Life often carries so many stressors, it is these unhealthy learned responses that often keep us locked in cycles of stress and prevent us from enjoying life and our relationships in it.
I use CBT approaches to understand problematic thought processes and emotionally reparative theories to understand emotional responses. This can help us understand why we sometimes feel overwhelmed in situations that are emotionally triggering, often the case in anxiety and depression and self harming or self injurious behaviours.
Please feel free to email or contact me by telephone. I am happy to offer an initial telephone / online consultation to discuss your goals of therapy. If you feel we are a good mix we can decide how to proceed from there. I work using a non judgemental and compassionate approach as I appreciate how brave it is to share our biggest difficulties. I maintain a strong ethical approach to ensure your wellbeing is at the core of any work we do together.
Maybe you are looking to feel 'normal' or 'happy', lets work out what that means for you. Whatever has led you to seek out counselling by working together, solutions can be found.
Training, qualifications & experience
- MSc 2020 Integrative Psychotherapy
- BA (Hon) 2004 Community Justice
- BSc (Hon) 2000 Criminology
I have worked in forensic and community rehabilitation settings since 2002. During this time I have worked with a range of challenging behaviours, including childhood trauma, unhealthy intimate relationships, addictions too many different types of behaviour, self harm, violence, abuse, anxiety and depression. I believe that the key to addressing many of these difficulties is through building a healthy therapeutic relationship. We can understand the patterns of why you respond in certain ways. Understanding these patterns provide us with a choice to make changes. This allows you the opportunity to overcome the thoughts, emotions and behaviours that are stopping you achieving the best version of you.
