About me

Hi, I’m Paddy, a neurodivergent (ND) counsellor and therapist who has a massive desire to explain at great length and detail how and why I’m ND so as to avoid any confusion, and to lend as much validity to my largely ‘self identified’ status as I can.

Whether you’ve had therapy or counselling before or this is your first time, choosing who to work with can be a daunting task. What you can expect from me is regular sessions where we explore whatever you’re struggling with at a pace that doesn’t overwhelm you. You don’t have to dive into the big bad stuff straight away if that doesn’t feel right for you. I’ll invite you to talk about what it is that you’re looking for support with, and ask questions about your experiences. What is important to me is that together we establish a trusting relationship, as I believe that’s where real, lasting change happens. Sometimes the trust comes quickly, sometimes it requires patience, but I am committed to making our relationship a safe one for you.

Ultimately the process of choosing a therapist or counsellor to work with requires some degree of risk, it might not work out with whomever you choose. It is a relationship after all. I hope though that within in the limiting confines of this directory I can demonstrate myself well enough for you to choose me well, or at least intrigue your curiosity enough to read more on my website. Getting as far in this process as you have can be a lot, so well done, and well done again for whatever step you take next.

Training, qualifications & experience

I completed my counselling training (PGDip) with Persona Counselling accredited by Aberdeen University covering various aspects of CPD such as suicide, race, class, sexuality and gender, addiction, and trauma.

I have been working a voluntary and session counsellor with a number of services with Crossreach in Edinburgh since 2019 as well as Stepping Stones in the South East of England since 2020. The majority of this work has focussed on topics such as burnout, coping with emotion in the work place, and trauma.

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.
