About me
I am a qualified counsellor experienced in working with adults and young people. I am down-to-earth, compassionate and non-judgemental.
My approach is integrative, rooted in rigorous humanistic (or person-centred) training. This means I put the relationship between us at the heart of our work together. I am trained to draw on a variety of therapeutic skills and approaches that best suit you as an individual and I will be led by what you need. I can bring in helpful frameworks or creative practices (for when words are not enough) to help us explore, understand and find a way forwards. Every person is unique and so, I tailor my approach to each individual client. I work with clients for as long (or short) as they need.
Between us we can explore and make sense of what’s going on for you. We can seek to understand where difficulties come from and look at how to move forward. I can help you to find strategies that help you cope with challenges or look at how to make change. It might be that our work together is about telling your story (and having it heard) or developing greater self-acceptance and finding out what it means to ‘be you’.
I offer you a confidential and supportive relationship in which to be yourself. I am experienced in working with adults and young people struggling with difficulties including:
anxiety
depression
low self-esteem
stress
bereavement and loss
the impact of trauma or abuse
self-harm
relationship difficulties
Working with adolescents and young adults
I have worked with adolescents and young adults in school, university and charity settings. I have a sound understanding of the challenges that young people face as they navigate their lives. I worked in different universities for 20 years supporting students as they made the transition into a new phase of life and navigating their way through the pressures and challenges of being at university and then into the world of work.
Change can be exciting but also anxiety-provoking and lonely. I am passionate about supporting people through whatever change in life they are experiencing.
Bereavement, loss and grief
I am particularly interested in working with bereavement and loss, having trained and volunteered with Cruse Bereavement Care for a number of years. We can experience grief from all kinds of change and losses (not just bereavement): work, friendships, diagnoses, divorce, illness pregnancy, becoming a parent, to name but a few. Events such as these disrupt our sense of self, our sense of normalcy and can lead to heightened anxiety, low self-esteem and feelings of depression.
I can support you as you find your way through the challenging times, provide a space to process your thoughts and feelings and discover the resources you have to see you through.
Neuro-divergence
I am experienced in working with neuro-divergent clients; in particular, those living with ADHD and Autism (diagnosed or not). If you’d like a space to be heard and to be understood, please get in touch.
I support adults and young people over the age of 16 in person in Redland and in Montpelier, Bristol, or online. For new clients I offer a free introductory telephone/online chat in which you can see if you are comfortable with me and how I work.
