About me
Hello and thank you for taking the time to read my profile. My name is Louise Catherine Taylor and I am an accredited psychotherapeutic counsellor, registered with the National Counselling and Psychotherapy Society.
I have experience in helping clients with a wide range of difficulties including relationship issues, trauma and abuse, coping with grief and loss, anxiety, and depression. As a former special education tutor, I also have extensive experience of working with individuals with autism spectrum conditions, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and learning needs such as dyslexia and dyspraxia.
My therapeutic style is truly eclectic, meaning that I am not bound by any particular style or set of techniques. I am trained in person-centred counselling, cognitive behavioural therapy, and expressive therapies (for example, art, music, movement and story making.) I have undertaken extensive additional training to enable me to work safely with traumatised clients, including the Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT), also known as “Tapping therapy” as it involves tapping various points on the body which helps to alleviate difficult emotions and/or physical pain.
I work with my clients to create an open and safe environment where thoughts and feelings can be shared without fear of judgment. Taking the first step to seeking a more fulfilling and happier life takes courage. I am here to support you in that process. I will not tell you what to do, nor will I claim to have all of the answers. I will listen to you without judging and I will provide a safe space where you can find your own answers.
Outside of the therapy room, I enjoy martial arts, running and yoga. I am also a member of Playback Theatre, a global theatre movement where actors perform audience members' stories.
Expressive Arts Therapies
Prior to training as a counsellor, I have been an actor, a dance and drama teacher, a lecturer in a specialist college for adults with learning disabilities and/or autism spectrum conditions, and an assistant to an Art Therapist in Singapore. My interest in the arts shifted from performing myself to using the arts as a way to heal emotional difficulties and I incorporate creativity into my therapeutic work where appropriate. If you can't find the words or talking is hard, we can work in other ways. For example, mark making using soft pastels, drawing, story making, body movement, using music, or writing. No special skill is needed as there is no "right" way to be creative.
Couple Therapy
In couple therapy sessions, both partners work with the counsellor to explore difficulties in their relationship or navigate challenges, stresses or changes together. Discussing such challenges in a safe and supportive space can help each partner to find a deeper level of empathy and understanding. Couple therapy can help partners to identify underlying feelings, uncover relationship strengths, heal past wounds, and learn new tools and techniques to resolve differences and feel more connected.
It is important to find the right therapist, therefore I offer a free online Introductory session where we can discuss your needs and you can decide if the therapy that I offer best meets your needs.
I am currently available for online appointments or from my home in Wigan, just outside of the town centre. I can also work from a rented therapy room in Leigh for an extra fee to cover room hire.
Please feel free to contact me by email to arrange an initial introductory appointment.
