About me

I’m Julia Brown, an Art Psychotherapist based in Swansea, offering a safe and supportive space for children, adolescents and young adults to explore thoughts and feelings through creativity. I’m HCPC registered and have experience working across both school and community settings, offering one-to-one and group sessions. I’ve worked with young people experiencing a wide range of challenges, including anxiety, depression, eating disorders, neurodiversity, difficulties with self-esteem, school attendance and engagement, SEN, bullying, anger and attachment difficulties.

I also have experience supporting young people and young adults affected by domestic abuse, drug and substance misuse, socioeconomic disadvantage, employability and life transitions. Alongside this, I have worked with young carers, providing a supportive space where they can explore their experiences, develop self-understanding and build confidence.

I take a flexible and person-centred approach, adapting sessions to the individual needs, interests and strengths of each person I work with. There is no expectation to be “good at art” — the focus is on the process of creating, exploring and finding your own ways of expressing yourself.

Above all, I aim to create a relaxed, welcoming and non-judgemental space where young people can feel comfortable being themselves and explore things at their own pace.

Training, qualifications & experience

I have worked with young people for most of my adult life, through childcare, within school settings, and previously as a paediatric nurse. Alongside my experience of working with children and young people, I am an established illustrator and have always had a strong interest in the therapeutic and expressive potential of art. I decided to undertake a Master’s in Art Psychotherapy as a way of bringing together these two passions, combining my professional experience of supporting young people with my creative practice and belief in the value of art as a means of communication and expression. My training is psychodynamic, which focuses on understanding how our early experiences, relationships and unconscious processes can influence how we feel, think and relate to others. I am particularly interested in the power of art to help us access and explore experiences, feelings and thoughts, offering another way of communicating and making sense of our internal worlds. I am also a trained Ecotherapist and feel strongly that the relationship between the natural world, creativity and wellbeing is invaluable, particularly within the pressures and challenges of the world we live in today. I am passionate about creating opportunities for young people to explore creativity, connection and self-expression in ways that feel safe, meaningful and accessible.

The HCPC are an independent, UK-wide health regulator. They set standards of professional training, performance and conduct for 16 professions.

They keep a register of health professionals who meet their standards, and they take action if registered health professionals fall below those standards. They were created by a piece of legislation called the Health Professions Order 2001.
