About me
Hello! I’m guessing you have landed on my profile because you’ve made the big decision to start therapy. Instead of the hard part being over, you’ve probably found yourself in this slightly weird corner of the internet scrolling through endless profiles trying to work out who feels approachable and who you might be able to open up to, all from a few paragraphs on a screen. So, despite the limitations of a profile like this, I’ll do my best to give you a feel for who I am and what it might be like to work with me.
I’m Jess, and A Place to Begin is my therapy practice. I'm a relational psychotherapist qualified in integrative transactional analysis. So, what does that actually mean?
Working together
I see therapy as a collaborative process between two human beings, rather than somebody arriving with all the answers and somebody else needing to be “fixed”. The relationship we build together is at the heart of the work, so it’s important to me that therapy feels safe enough for you to talk openly and honestly.
I combine curiosity, compassion, and gentle challenge in my work with clients, and aim to create a space where you feel able to bring all parts of yourself into the room, rather than feeling you need to present in a certain way.
A journey of understanding
For me, therapy is ultimately about understanding ourselves more deeply. I think many of us move through life shaped by experiences, relationships, expectations and environments that have influenced the way we think, feel, behave and see ourselves, often without us even realising it. Over time, those experiences can become patterns, ways of coping, or beliefs about who we are and what we should expect from ourselves and the world around us.
I believe therapy can be incredibly powerful in helping us to identify and challenge those patterns. Sometimes that means understanding why we respond to things in the way we do. Sometimes it means recognising that the version of ourselves we have become no longer feels quite right, or no longer fits who we are now or who we want to be. Through that process, therapy can help us to build a deeper understanding of ourselves, our relationships, and the lives we want to create.
One thing I have found incredibly valuable, both personally and professionally, is the opportunity to understand who we are beneath the expectations, labels, or limiting beliefs we may have carried. A lot of my work centres around identity, whether that relates to gender, sexuality, anxiety, self-worth, or simply a feeling of not quite knowing who you are anymore. My hope is to help people reconnect with themselves and what they want from life. Because of that, I work openly and inclusively with people of all identities and backgrounds, and provide an affirming space for LGBTQ+ identities.
Getting started
Having had my own therapy, I understand how important it is to find a therapist you genuinely feel comfortable with. If, after reading this, you think we might be a good fit, I’d really encourage you to get in touch.
I offer a free 30-minute initial consultation by phone where you can ask any questions you may have about therapy and we can discuss what you might like to focus on in our time together.
I offer weekly and fortnightly sessions both online and in person in York. I currently have some limited availability on Tuesdays in the evening and in the daytime on Wednesdays.
