About me

Jackie is a person-centred counsellor who specialises in working with transgender, non-binary, gender expansive or gender-questioning people, and spouses, partners, parents and family members of those who have identified as having gender identity issues.

Jackie is in the somewhat unusual position of having significant personal experience of gender identity from various sources; her ex-spouse came out to her in 2013 and transitioned, she has a dual-gender child and her husband is bi-gender. This gives her a great deal of empathy and insight into the emotional turmoil and confusion gender variance can create for the individual and wider family from different perspectives.

Training, qualifications & experience

Jackie and her husband Paula founded a registered charity called Safe Haven – Cornwall in 2016, to provide support to the transgender community. Jackie facilitates 3 support groups for transgender adults, their partners and family members, and gender-questioning teenagers, as well as organising events and retreats throughout the year.  She is also an Independent Advisor and Third Party Hate Crime Reporter with the Devon & Cornwall Police Diversity team.

Jackie’s heavy involvement with, and commitment to, the gender-diverse community over the last 10 years gives her a unique insight on both a personal and professional level, making her ideally placed for counselling and psychotherapy within the LGBTQAI+ community. For the last 7 years, she has been a Senior Counsellor for a well-known online gender clinic, helping 1000 people to become their true selves, recently leaving to focus on her private practice.

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

Further information

Before qualifying as a counsellor and psychotherapist, Jackie worked for Devon Social Services for 15 years, using her person-centred approach to help young people in long term foster care make sense of their lives and move forward in a positive way. During this time she undertook a lot of training in working with people on the Autistic Spectrum and this gives her a deep understanding of neurodiversity, and its correlation with gender identity. Jackie believes having a down-to-earth, non-judgemental ethos encourages people to explore their thoughts and feelings honestly on whatever they bring to the session.
