About us

Eating Distress North East (EDNE) aims to help those individuals and their families whose lives are affected by eating distress or eating disorders.

Based in the North East of England we offer a supportive, emphatic and non-judgemental environment for you to explore your eating distress. Our counsellors are all fully qualified and have experience in this area. We believe that eating distress is a way of saying that something is wrong, therefore, we do not just respond to the symptoms but look at underlying causes.

We use the term eating distress rather than eating disorder because we want to support all those who experience extreme anxiety around food and eating. We are aware from the feedback we have received from people we have worked with that, whilst many have a diagnosed eating disorder, some of those who need our support and understanding do not feel they ‘fit’ an eating disorder category.

We offer one-to-one counselling to those over 16 with mild to moderate eating distress, who have a BMI (Body Mass Index) of 17.5 and above.

We offer a one-off counselling sessions to friends and family looking after those with eating distress; we also facilitate the Maudsley Model training course which is free to carers of those struggling with eating distress.

We also facilitate health and wellbeing sessions which cover topics such as self-esteem, negative thoughts, better sleep and coping with Christmas.

We can provide talks and training on eating disorders to your organisation, school, university, doctor's surgery etc. Please contact us for further information.

Training, qualifications & experience

All our counsellors are qualified, hold membership with the British Association of Counsellors and Psychotherapists (BACP) and have experience of working with those with eating distress.

Member organisations *

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

We have verified that at least one professional at this organisation is registered with the relevant professional body.
