About me

Hello – My name is Claire Barrett and I am an experienced attachment-based integrative therapist and supervisor working with wide range of emotional difficulties.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

There are times in our lives, when we experience problems that we find difficult to cope with and these difficulties can affect our quality of life & emotional well-being. Asking for help can be a daunting step to take and it can be challenging to know where to start.

"Sometimes the hardest way to show up for ourselves is asking for help "              - Edith Eger

As an experienced therapist, supervisor  I am able to support you in a compassionate, confidential & professional way to talk about the problems you may be facing. I have worked extensively with a range of emotional difficulties and offer both in-person and on-line therapy sessions.

Based in the Tunbridge Wells area, I work both in-person and on-line and see clients in the UK and overseas.

I am a Registered Member of the British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP) and an Accredited Member of the National Counselling & Psychotherapy Society (NCPS).

In-person sessions are held at a private venue which offers a peaceful, natural, and calm environment. My therapy room is light and spacious and enjoys views of the surrounding semi-rural space which we may also choose to work in.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I consider myself an integrative therapist as I have trained in and draw on several therapeutic approaches to work with clients’ past and current challenges, and to work with your individual needs. Attachment theory particularly informs this, but I have also studied psychodynamic, psychoanalytic, humanistic and trauma informed approaches. My website gives you more detail about working in an attachment focused way.

Our counselling relationship will be central to our work together. It is very different to the type of one you will experience with friends, family & colleagues. It is secure, confidential & contained and the focus is on your experience of your problems. I will not give you advice, nor will I judge you or tell you what to do, but instead I will accept all your experiences & feelings as valid and work with you to make sense of them. Greater insight & self-awareness can lead to making long-lasting changes that can help you lead a more fulfilled life & have an increased sense of well-being.

Together we can work through what you feel is best for you and in doing so, you may start to manage your life differently. My aim is to support you in gaining the capacity & confidence to better support yourself.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

If you need any more information then please get in touch on 07934 249925 for a free confidential conversation or e-mail me using the link on this page or via my website link - info@clairebarrettcounselling.co.uk - I will happily answer any questions and maybe together we can work out if counselling is right for you.

If I am unable to answer my phone, please leave a message. My email & answer service are confidential and I will get back to you within 48 hours (Mon-Fri).

“When we deny our stories, they define us. When we own our stories, we get to write a brave new ending… I now see how owning our story and loving ourselves through that process is the bravest thing that we will ever do”                                  - Brene Brown

Other Counselling Work & Experience:

In addition to working privately, I am a supervisor at a counselling charity in Bromley.

I have also worked as a counsellor in a local GP practice & within an NHS Tier 3 adult weight management service. Here I gained specialist training, experience and interest in working with emotional eating, over-eating and binge eating issues. Some of my private work is now with clients who want to understand and address the emotional issues that underpin their struggle with their weight, psychologically prepare for bariatric surgery or help those who have started to sabotage existing bariatric surgery.

Prior to life as a therapist, I worked as a business analyst & trainer where I developed & facilitated training for individuals & groups. Time spent in a pressurised, working environment has given me insight into how you may be finding work stressful, experiencing performance anxiety and have work-life balance worries & problems.

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

Accredited register membership

British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy
Accredited Register Scheme

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

This therapist has indicated that they belong to an Accredited Register.
