About me

Compassionate space for all life brings

Counselling/Psychotherapy for individuals, couples and teenagers.

After spending the past six years as a counsellor in the charity sector I have worked in a variety of organisations offering emotional support to people who are suffering with a wide range of issues from addiction, bereavement, sexual trauma, anxiety and depression. However, I recognise that human suffering is often complex and do not believe that peoples pain can be easily labelled. In my work I have supported adults, teenagers and children who come to the counselling room in attempt to "just feel better" its important to me to treat each person as unique and support them to find the answers that are right for their individual experience. Helping a client to better understand themselves will allow them to develop tools to continue the healing work outside of the counselling room.

I have experience working with clients who have symptoms of post traumatic stress disorder and I use Cognitive Processing Therapy to help clients reframe the thinking patterns that can maintain symptoms associated to PTSD.  When working with trauma more broadly I use both psychoeducation (knowledge about the psychological and emotional affect of trauma)and grounding techniques to help people work through painful memories with the aim to start the journey of emotional healing.

I am experienced and passionate in working with women's issues, whether this be relating to motherhood and fertility, peri menopause and menopause or with survivors of sexual abuse. The world can often be a difficult and scary place for women and girls and I work from a feminist perspective helping to build self esteem and happiness.

Currently I am providing counselling to women who are navigating the often difficult transition into motherhood. I have spent the past three years learning about the intense and sometimes destabilising changes that happen to women whilst pregnant and in the postpartum period. I hold empathic space to explore the huge changes the season of motherhood brings. Whilst exploring the neurological changes that can affect women’s mental health whilst pregnant and after birth. I recognise the systemic and political climate that often leaves women overly responsible and isolated and believe talking therapy offers a chance for much needed self care.

My training is both person centred and psychotherapeutic, meaning I will work with what is happening for you in the moment whilst gently exploring connections this may have to the past. Through exploring childhood experiences related to attachment it can often be uncovered how these events are impacting clients in the here and now. I am trained and experienced in attachment theory and find that this often manifests in my work with clients both in their inner world and their relationships with others. Counselling sessions provide an opportunity to form a secure and safe bond with another skilled listener which allow space for relational wounds to arise and be worked through responsibly.

Children & Young People - I have many years experience working with children and young people and I adapt my approach to use play and creativity as the main form of communication. Younger clients are often not able to articulate difficult feelings verbally and this can often result in acting out or retreating into themselves. The counselling room is a place where they can use their often innate ability to play and create in order to express themselves through metaphor by using toys, painting or sandtrays. I remain person centred in my approach and encourage the child to lead the sessions whilst maintaining consistent boundaries throughout.

Couples Counselling - Working with couples in order to reframe the relationship as a place of safety for both people to freely express themselves without fear of criticism or anger. I will facilitate the session by helping the couple to feel empowered and safe to be open and vulnerable. Developing healthy communication allows for an environment where issues around trust, resentment, anger and intimacy can be effectively worked through. I use Psychosexual insight to support couples to work through intimacy issues. I am open minded and non judgmental and offer a safe space to talk openly about the issues couples may be experiencing. When working with issues related to sex I work from a trauma informed perspective and allow space for open and honest reflection whilst being supportive and compassionate about the difficulties that can arise.

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred). Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA). Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision. Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training. All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.
