About me

Hi, my name is Catherine Geary, I am a BACP registered Eating Disorder Therapist.

I work with people who have diagnosed eating disorders such as Binge Eating Disorder, Bulimia and Anorexia, but also people who do not have a diagnosed ED but have issues with their relationship with food and their body.

I provide bespoke individual therapy for women who want to let go of disordered eating and live their life free from the excessive "noise" food and body image concerns.

I work mainly online but am based in Belfast, if you are based in Belfast too and would like to work in person, please let me know as this can be arranged.

My mission is to help women break free from diet culture and find freedom with food.

Book a free consultation with me here to get the ball rolling: https://foodfreedomtherapy.co.uk/contact/

  • Are you tired of struggling with your relationship with food and your body?
  • Maybe you feel consumed by dieting or exercising, binging or restricting?
  • Is your self-esteem and confidence suffering due to your relationship with food, your social life and relationships might be impacted and maybe you feel, anxious or depressed?
  • I am here to help you recover from disordered eating and find freedom with food for good!

Together we will understand how your eating issues came about, what your relationship with food looks like and how we need to change that! I incorporate psychodynamic theory, CBT-E and the principle of intuitive eating in our work together.

Training, qualifications & experience

My initial clinical training was in psychodynamic counselling, this helps us gain insight into the underlying causes of your eating and body issues, understand what your unique relationship with food looks like and how we need to change that to move towards a life free from disordered eating. We might also utilise techniques from Enahnced CBT for eating disorders to address behavioural complexities and thoughts that are associated with eating issues. I also incorporate the principles of intuitive eating in my work and firmly advocate for a non-diet and health at every size (HAES) approach.

I am a fully registered member of the BACP (MBACP). I hold a first class Masters degree in Psychology where I specialised in eating disorders and body image, I have a Diploma in Psychodynamic Counselling and I have completed CBT for eating disorders training through Oxford University.

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred). Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA). Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision. Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training. All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

Accredited register membership

British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy
Accredited Register Scheme

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

This therapist has indicated that they belong to an Accredited Register.
