About me
Are you struggling with your relationship with food and your body? Do you feel anxious or depressed? Maybe you feel overwhelmed, lost or stuck in life, struggle with your sense of self or your relationships with others?
About Me
Hi, my name is Catherine Geary, I am a Psychodynamic Counsellor based in Belfast. I work in Belfast and Online supporting clients across the UK and Ireland.
I offer both short-term and long-term individual online and in-person therapy.
I also offer a free consultation of up to 30 minutes to learn more and see if we would be the right fit to work together.
Who I Work With
As a BACP registered psychodynamic counsellor I am qualified to provide long and short term therapy to individuals with a range of issues. I have experience providing counselling to clients with anxiety and depression, eating disorders, struggles with sense of self and direction in life, difficulties with relationships with others, difficulties with perfectionism, self harm, poor self-esteem & self-confidence, and anger issues, to name a few.
Working with me will provide you with an understanding and safe space to explore yourself and the challenges you are facing.
I see our work in therapy as a collaborative process in which I work together with clients on the things they would most like to improve in their lives.
Eating Disorders
I also specialise in working with individuals who have eating disorders and disordered eating as their primary issue. Although its nearly always the case that our work together includes working through other psychological difficulties too. This is because eating disorders are not all about the food, and exploring the underlying causes of eating problems is a crucial step to resolve them.
It doesn't matter whether you have been diagnosed with an eating disorder or not. If your relationship with food and your body is causing you emotional distress and preventing you from engaging in the life you want, then therapy can help you.
My Approach
I work primarily from a Psychodynamic perspective. That means we will think about your changing emotions and feelings towards yourself and others, we will discuss childhood memories and relationships, and think about the significance of the past and its repetition in the present. Through talking in Therapy we aim to gain an understanding of your unconscious thoughts. This helps to provide insight into why you feel and behave the way you do. From there you will be able to learn how to manage your life differently and how to make changes to move towards the type of life that you want.
Eating Disorders
If you would like to work with me to recover from your Eating Disorder/eating issues, my approach is very similar. Together we will understand how your eating issues came about and how your current difficulties are linked to your past experiences, and how we can change that. Exploring the underlying cause and adaptive function of eating problems is a crucial step to resolve eating issues for good. If appropriate I will also incorporate elements of enhanced CBT for Eating Disorders and Intuitive Eating. These methodologies can offer some additional practical tools which I find are very helpful to support you in everyday recovery, particularly during short term work.

Member organisations

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred). Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA). Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision. Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training. All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.
Accredited register membership

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).
This therapist has indicated that they belong to an Accredited Register.
