About me

You may be feeling weighed down by shame, unseen or misunderstood by others, or unsure who you are beneath the expectations placed on you. These feelings can be isolating, and it can be hard to know where to turn. Therapy can offer a space to explore these experiences with care and depth.

I am an HCPC-registered Counselling Psychologist offering psychological therapy. I practise independently, primarily online or face-to-face in Reading city centre, as The Humane Psychologist, reflecting my commitment to a compassionate and human-centred approach.

I currently work within NHS secondary care services, and over the past seven years, I have held a variety of roles across NHS, both in primary and secondary care. Throughout this time, I have learned a great deal from the people I have worked with - their experiences continue to shape and deepen my understanding of what truly supports meaningful change.

Who I often work with

Many of the people I work with carry diagnoses or labels such as depression, anxiety, PTSD, Bipolar Disorder, EUPD, Autism or ADHD. Others may not have a diagnosis or relate to labels, but want to understand their experiences and find new ways of living. While diagnoses can offer language and structure, they may also feel limiting or may not capture the complexity of lived experience. My work moves beyond the medical model, recognising distress not as a fixed category but as something shaped by personal, social, and cultural contexts, and by the stories we tell about ourselves.

This space may be especially meaningful for people who have felt unseen or misunderstood in other settings, including those from marginalised or under-represented backgrounds. People who find psychological therapy with me fruitful often experience intense feelings of shame, guilt, embarrassment, blame, anxiety, desperation, or despair. It may also suit those who are drawn to exploring identity, shame, power and belonging, in a reflective and nuanced way.

If this resonates with you, I would be honoured to support you in exploring these experiences.

My approach

I practise as a pluralistic therapist, drawing on a range of psychological theories and modalities rather than following a ‘one-size-fits-all’ model. If growth comes through engaging with the world around you, we may use approaches such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) or Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). If change feels more internal, we may work through a Psychodynamic or Compassion-Focused Therapy (CFT) lens.

My doctoral research on shame informs my humanistic, systemic and discursive perspective, recognising how personal, social and cultural factors shape emotional distress. My therapy space is open, inclusive and affirming of diverse experiences, including those shaped by gender, sexuality, neurodiversity, race, culture, religion and class.

You and I may share certain socially constructed identities, or we may not – I aim to create a space where we can explore these identities, while also finding ways to exist beyond them.

What to expect from therapy with me

Therapy with me is collaborative, exploratory and grounded in authenticity. There are no rigid ‘right or wrong’ perspectives. Together, we consider what kind of therapeutic change feels most meaningful for you. If appropriate, we might use structured tools such as worksheets and reflective exercises; if not, our work may simply unfold through thoughtful conversation.

A guiding question in our work might be: Who are you, beyond the roles and expectations society has placed on you?

How psychological therapy can help

Therapy offers a safe and supportive space to express yourself without having to manage someone else’s reactions. It can be a place to name experiences you may not have shared before - or perhaps never fully acknowledged to yourself.

Change can emerge both within sessions and in the quiet moments between them. Therapy can deepen self-awareness, help develop coping strategies, and offer new perspectives on how you engage with your life and relationships. Guided by psychological theory, professional ethics and evidence-based knowledge, therapy provides a structured and compassionate space to work towards meaningful personal growth.
