About me

I create a safe and empathetic exploratory space for people who wish to understand themselves more deeply, overcome challenges and explore options to achieve their goals for greater self fulfilment and wellbeing.

As an Accredited Counsellor, Therapist and Coach, I bring all of my training, knowledge and 30 years of therapeutic experience to our work together. This helps us to work in ways that are most helpful for you.

What Can I Expect?

Acceptance and compassion are at the core of any of our sessions, as this creates the conditions for changes to unfold and for you to feel fully supported in our work together. I will also encourage you to foster self-compassion as part of developing healthy self-care practices, to increase your sense of inner resourcefulness.

I provide a warm and engaging environment where you can explore any challenges you’re facing and make sense of your situation and its impact on you. When you’ve gained clarity about what’s making you feel the way you do and feel fully resourced, there may be some decisions and changes you would like to make that we can explore together.

Although how we work together may differ from session to session, depending on what’s most needed, some examples of how we may work together are:

Anxiety, Stress, Low Mood and Overwhelm

Counselling is a supportive process which helps you to understand and process how you’re feeling, enabling you to move through any difficult emotions, so you feel more resourced and able to manage any on-going challenges you’re facing.

In our work together we may look at how your thoughts, mood and habits are impacting you and what factors are causing increased stress in your life. When we feel stressed or under pressure it’s usual to experience negative intrusive thoughts and worry excessively for example. I will help you to understand how your mind processes anxiety, stress and worry, enabling you to develop new coping strategies that support you in moving through any areas of stuckness, improving your mood, motivation and outlook.

When we’re going through a difficult time, especially if it goes on for a long time, it’s understandable that we can feel overwhelmed. Self care is an important way to protect ourself from becoming depleted or ‘run down’ and avoids impacting our health and well-being. Yet self care is so easy to forget to prioritise, especially when we’re focused on caring for others, or when we’re busy and focused on other important areas of our life. Many clients also have difficulty saying no to others and become weighed down with additional tasks and responsibilities to be helpful and avoid upsetting others. If you feel this relates to you, we can explore any areas of imbalance and look at healthy ways to prioritise your own needs and self care and how to set appropriate personal boundaries that safeguard your time, energy and resources.

Trauma

Traumatic experiences can impact us long after their initial impact, limiting our ability to lead our lives in the way we wish to. I can work with you to address and resolve past traumas and the associated memories and release any trapped emotions safely and gently.

I use a combination of advanced techniques and self help tools based on the latest research on trauma and somatic release. These approaches are safe and effective, ‘re-wiring’ unconscious patterns, so you can change your responses to past events and gain movement in areas of life where you may have felt restricted or stuck.

Work and Career

Over the past 18 years I have specialised in supporting people in the workplace with a wide range of personal and work related issues by working with a number of workplace counselling providers, also known as EAP’s. (Employee Assistance Programmes) As most clients are only allocated a brief number of sessions through their workplace provider, I have become proficient in exploring solutions to a wide range of issues and helping clients to affect change in a short number of sessions. Although an essential aspect of what I do involves listening and understanding people and developing trust, because of the specialised work I have done in this area and the sheer volume of different people and situations I have encountered over the years, my style of working with clients can also be described as dynamic and down to earth. Sessions may include some psycho-education, creative exercises or approaches and things to try between sessions to discover what works best for you.

If this appeals to you and you would like to discuss any challenges in your work situation that are causing you stress, overwhelm or unhappiness I am happy to bring my experience to your situation. Examples of work issues we can explore are: your work/life balance, interpersonal conflicts, sickness absence, burn-out, frequent organisational changes, job dissatisfaction and loss of direction, imposter syndrome, work overload, procrastination, bullying and harassment, promotion and career progression etc.

There are many ways we can work together and clients come with a range of challenges, needs and goals. I would recommend that you visit the ‘Further Information’ section to read client testimonials and their own experience of how they have benefited from our work together.

If you would like more information, I invite you to contact me for a free introductory telephone or zoom chat. This doesn’t obligate you in any way and it helps us to discover whether we’re a good fit and how we would work best together.

Experience
As an Accredited Counsellor and member of the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy I have been in counselling practice since 1998. Before training as a Counsellor I was a Holistic Therapist and my passion for learning different approaches to healing and change has continued and has enabled me to bring a broad range of creative approaches to my work with clients. In 2018 I qualified as a Certified Fusion Therapeutic Coach enabling me to bridge the gaps between counselling, therapy and coaching and work interchangeably across the different therapeutic fields.

Historically I have worked in a number of health and social care settings, including a GP Practice, Bereavement and Loss Charity, various helplines and a specialist Cancer Hospital. For the past 16 years in addition to my private practice I have worked with several EAP's (Employee Assistance Programmes) providing counselling for employees of various organisations, including trainee Doctors.

I currently have a private practice at the Willows in Torquay where I offer an integrative approach to counselling, therapy and coaching and provide bespoke training and workshops on mental health and well-being related topics.

Registered / Accredited

Being registered/accredited with a professional body means an individual must have achieved a substantial level of training and experience approved by their member organisation.

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred). Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA). Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision. Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training. All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

This therapist has indicated that they belong to an Accredited Register.

“I’m so relieved that I can now move on after months of fear and unknowing and I’m determined to find a way to manage my physical symptoms and live life to the full. Thank you so much for your help, support and kindness over this challenging time. Your wise words and the tools you gave me really helped me to get through it and equipped me to manage anxiety and remain positive, something I can take into the future.”

“I was going through some extremely heavy emotions and mentally in a dark place not knowing how to cope. With Angela's guidance understanding and support I have been given the tools not only to conquer my existing demons, but to face any other challenges that I approach."

" Counselling helped me enormously following the breakdown of my long-term relationship. Our sessions enabled me to think much more clearly about the situation, to identify and come to terms with the issues my partner and I had experienced and eventually to move on to the next phase of my life."

“Angela was excellent in helping me deal with traumatic incidents from my past which were causing me stress and difficulties in my work and personal relationships. Angela helped me to change my thought processes and I saw huge improvements in my work and personal life as a result. I now work with Angela a few times a year and can’t recommend her highly enough.”

"I am so glad that I found Angela when I did, I felt comfortable with her really quickly and was soon able to talk at ease with her. Angela is very reassuring and has a very friendly nature. She made me realise that I was able to cope with the things in my life that I had for a long time been struggling with. Angela helped me with the tools which made it possible for me to deal with my issues and move forward in a positive way in my life. I feel so much better about myself and my life now and will be eternally grateful to her for this."

" I first contacted Angela to try to understand how I could deal with the feelings of anxiety I was experiencing, in running what was becoming an increasingly hectic life style, juggling running a business and family. Our initial consultation came as a relief to me, as I felt the first step was by far the most difficult, but I needn't have worried as Angela not only put me at ease but clear objectives were agreed and set.

I found counselling sessions, coupled with mindfulness and relaxation a great help! After a number of sessions we reviewed the original targets and discovered, not only had they been met, but in most cases surpassed! Thank you Angela for your help."
