About me
A bit about me:
Hi, I’m Abi, I’m a qualified and trauma-informed Psychotherapeutic Integrative Counsellor and Supervisor, which means that I'm trained in several different types of therapy. My core approach is person-centred because it is my absolute belief that you are the expert on you.
How I approach therapy:
I like to think of therapy as a walk which you are choosing to share with me. My job is not to tell you which route to take or which path to follow, it is to walk by your side, every step of the way, and to draw your attention to some of the things you may usually not notice or not take the time to really acknowledge.
Some clients are fearful of therapy because even the thought of talking about difficult issues can feel upsetting but I will never expect you to talk about anything you are not ready to share.
Whilst I believe that our experiences, particularly in childhood, lay the foundations for the way we live our lives and you are invited to share anything without fear of judgement, I find that the use of both metaphor and the felt sense allows the work we do together to feel transformative but also safely held.
Many of my clients have experienced severe or enduring trauma which is often replayed in their relationships and impacts their self-worth, leading to anxiety, depression and distress. Many have complex coping strategies which may now become hard to manage so all sessions are led by client needs, and move at the speed of trust.
What next?
I’m very happy to have a no obligation chat over the phone or Zoom to find out more about what you are looking for and for you to check that you feel comfortable with me. To arrange this please drop me an email or select a preference from the options at the top of the page under ‘Book an intro’ call’.
Training, qualifications & experience
- Having volunteered for a counselling charity in Gloucestershire for many years I started working with private clients in 2013.
- I have a special interest in trauma in relation to long term mental ill health including diagnosis of personality disorders and my work is informed by the model of Internal Family Systems.
- In March 2020 I completed additional training and professional development in Online and Telephone Counselling to work with clients in times when face to face therapy is not possible.
- This has opened up my client work to people across the country and now the majority of my work is online.
- For the last nine years I have also worked with a charity challenging disabling barriers for 5 of these years I was working one to one in the community with people whose physical, mental wellness or neuroprocessing diversity led to extreme isolation.
- I continue to enhance my practice with additional learning and training and have undertaken hundreds of hours of continued professional development. I am also a Clinical Supervisor for other therapists.
- I am a member of and abide by the Ethical Framework of the BACP - British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy. I am also included on the BACP Register of Counsellors & Psychotherapists - the first psychological therapists' register to be accredited under a scheme set up by the Department of Health.
- Additionally, I am a member of the NCPS - National Counselling and Psychotherapy Society and ACTO - The Association for Counselling and Therapy Online.
Member organisations
BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).
Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).
Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.
Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.
All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.
Accredited register membership
The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).
This therapist has indicated that they belong to an Accredited Register.
