About me

Hi I'm Karen

I believe that providing I am not wasting your valuable time and money during sessions, it could be helpful for you to know a little about me before making an appointment.

I have spent over 30 years working in educational settings such as counselling in two local high schools, colleges campus's and various universities all over the UK as well as working within the NHS.  I also work with local authorities, victim support, the fire service, YMCA/NHS counselling services and various insurance companies including AXA, Aviva, Bupa which if you have private cover is easy to access just ask me how.

I am very passionate about working with clients aged 11 years upwards, who are from different cultures and diversity and I particularly enjoy working with neurodiverse clients whether diagnosed or suspected.  I understand that trust needs to work both ways so building that relationship is vital, I offer a quiet, non-judgemental environment where we can explore your concerns in confidence.  I am an integrative counsellor utilising CBT (cognitive behavioural therapy) which can help you manage your problems by changing the way you think and behave as well as incorporating DBT (dialectical behaviour therapy) which helps you find ways to accept yourself, feel safe and manage your emotions to help regulate potentially destructive or harmful behaviours as well as incorporating creative ways of working together to make the whole experience a pleasant one.

I have experienced therapy myself many times in previous years for things such as post-natal depression, anxiety in its many forms, empty nest syndrome and more recently for bereavement.  I found the experiences positive and immensely invaluable for my overall wellbeing.

Life can be unpredictable and some experiences can cause reactions we don’t fully understand. Counselling can help gain relief and clarity, helping you to find a healthier way forward. Hearing your thoughts and feelings out loud, in the presence of a well trained professional can bring about shifts in awareness and perception. Facing your concerns or fears can feel empowering, helping you to feel more in control. My aim is to provide a warm, welcoming safe environment where together we can explore any worries, problems or issues that are causing you any distress, sadness or anxiety.

With counselling you will gain an understanding of why you are feeling the way you are, working together on an equal level we can find a healthier way forward. I understand that revealing your thoughts and feelings to a stranger is not always easy.  As a trained accredited counsellor I am able to provide to you a confidential, non-judgemental and empathic environment where trust can be built, allowing exploration to flow naturally when the time is right for you.  I will support you and encourage you throughout.

I do offer an initial FREE 15 minute phone call to discuss your needs.

I work on a one to one basis with individuals, couples and families working on various issues.  I can also offer mindfulness group sessions for workplace settings or private groups.

Registered / Accredited

Being registered/accredited with a professional body means an individual must have achieved a substantial level of training and experience approved by their member organisation.

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred). Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA). Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision. Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training. All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.
