Counselling - how it can help and how you can use it

If you have never experienced counselling before, it can sometimes be hard to know what to expect and to understand how it can help you. This can make it a daunting experience and may put you off taking that first step. This short article aims to help you to understand a bit more about counselling, how it works and how you can use it so that you feel more confident to take the step that feels right for you. Everyone will have their own reasons for starting counselling, but what follows is a look at how counselling can work and how it can help you, no matter what your reasons for starting.

How can counselling help?

Counselling sessions provide a safe, supportive space where you can explore issues that are affecting you and talk about things that may be difficult to discuss elsewhere. Counselling sessions may even be the first time you have talked openly about whatever is bothering you. Sessions provide a space outside of your everyday life to explore your concerns. It can be helpful to have someone outside of your everyday circles to discuss things with, as it can help you to gain new perspectives. In sessions, you can speak freely about your feelings and how things impact you. This is a space just for you and this is not something we usually get elsewhere in our lives.

As you begin to explore your thoughts and feelings further, you begin to become more aware of both how things impact you and how you impact on others. This helps to make things clearer for you and helps them to make more sense, making it so much easier for you to make any desired changes.

Counselling helps you to understand yourself. Any habits, fears or doubts that have been holding you back become clearer to see and understand, helping you to make changes and pave a path to your brighter future.

Counselling helps you to gain focus, making it easier to stay in the present moment in order to work on the things that are impacting on you.

As your understanding of yourself grows, this enables you to more easily deal with any negative or traumatic experiences you may have had, meaning they have less control over your life. The work you do in counselling empowers you to start building the life you want. As well as gaining more understanding of your situation, counselling can also offer you ways of dealing with issues more effectively, meaning you have tools to cope better with whatever issues you are working on.

What you gain from your counselling sessions can stay with you long after your therapy has finished.

It is also important to remember that counselling can be hard work. However, you will not be alone on your journey. Counselling is a safe supportive space for you to do the work you need to do. Do make sure that you look after yourself during counselling. Your therapist can help you with self-care tips if you need them.

It is really important for you to pick the right counsellor for you, as having that right fit and feeling comfortable is essential to getting the most out of your therapy. Take some time to explore therapists you are interested in working with and do ask them any questions you may have. A counsellor should be happy to answer any questions and discuss your needs. This also helps you to get a feel for the counsellor and how it would be to work with them.

It is also worth remembering that counselling is not always about dealing with a problem, crisis or traumatic experience. Counselling can also be beneficial as a personal development tool. The more you understand about yourself, the easier it is for you to decide what you want from life and what will make you happier and more fulfilled.

Your counselling journey will be unique to you, but whatever your reasons for starting, it can be one of the best things you do for yourself.

I wish you luck on your journey!
