'Free to be' mindfulness day with yoga

The Garden Studio is a private space in the heart of Westbourne Grove, run by yoga teacher, Catherine Adams. She has teamed up with mindfulness teacher, Rosemary Sandham to offer a day of yoga and mindfulness practices.

Many of us have busy lives, juggling work, family and leisure time and it's often difficult to fit in new things or give yourself time to slow down, reflect and re-balance. Not everyone can take themselves off for a week to enjoy what yoga and mindfulness have to offer. With this in mind, we have created a retreat day where you can learn about the origins of both systems and have the opportunity to do some practices. Perhaps you are familiar with yoga but have not tried mindfulness, or maybe, you are already practising mindfulness but would like the opportunity to try some yoga. Maybe, you have no experience of either and are curious to find out what both systems have to offer. 

The day includes yoga and mindfulness practices, a lunch at Farmacy with a selection of their signature Earth Bowls and a cold pressed juice and a Closing Tea. There will also be Sweaty Betty goodie bags, kindly donated by our neighbourhood Sweaty Betty Store on Ledbury Road.

In many ways, yoga and mindfulness are very similar, sharing the end goal of achieving a calm state of mind. For most of us, that is easier said than done! If it were that easy, the world would be free of aggression, destructive egos and narcissim. Whilst both practices originate from different spiritual traditions, mindfulness from Buddhism and yoga from Vedanta, Sankhya and Tantra, they have evolved into practices without a religious intent (though, of course, there may well be a personal one) and have much to offer modern societies where the mind is often in over-drive, the nervous system on a high state of alert, and the body, fatigued and weak. Both practices enable us to develop healthier minds that are more focused, happy and calm.

Rosemary Sandham has been a psychotherapist for over 20 years, and works in organisations as a leadership facilitator and executive coach. She trained as a mindfulness teacher at Bangor University and Oxford Centre for Mindfulness Catherine Adams has practiced yoga for 25 years and teaches Vinyasa and is accredited by The British Wheel of Yoga.
