The course is based upon an integrative relational approach to supervision as opposed to a specific ‘counselling bound model’ and so aims to enable participants to supervise across a range of orientations and to develop their own unique style.

Aims:

• Provide participants with a range of theory and models to facilitate the ability to apply these in practice to a good level of confidence and competence.
• Develop the supervisory competences as outlined in ‘The competences framework for supervision’, published by Centre for Outcomes, Research & Effectiveness (CORE)

Objectives:

• Apply and understand a range of basic theoretical models of supervision.
• Build a range of skills required for individual and group supervision.
• Management and skills of setting up, maintaining, monitoring and closing a working alliance with supervisees.
• Develop the ability for evaluating supervisees, inviting feedback and writing appropriate reports.
• Negotiate individual learning needs with supervisees.
• Focus both on the supervisee’s work in the service of the client and on the supervisee’s ongoing development as a practitioner.
• Evaluate their own supervisory practice generally and in particular in relation to the CORE Competence Framework(s) for Supervision.

Curriculum:

The course has also been designed to satisfy the requirements of those who wish to apply for BACP recognition as supervisors.

Training Structure for Diploma in Supervision

The course has been structured on a 2-day modular basis, spaced approximately monthly to allow consolidation between modules and allow for minimum disruption to professional and personal life commitments. (We have missed out August to allow for holidays).

The entire course comprises of six 2-day modules. The initial module provides an overall map of the topics later expanded upon in the subsequent five modules. There is a considerable course emphasis on the practice of supervision. To facilitate this there is an opportunity on Modules 2 – 6 for live practice on each day of the course. This takes the form, on one of the days in each module, of working in small groups of three or four where live supervision is conducted with feedback from those peers present. On the alternate day of each module, live practice is conducted in a larger group (usually 7 to 9 participants) where supervision of supervision can be practised and can be received.

A list of recommended texts, handouts on material of interest and specific reading assignments related to the topics under discussion in a particular module will be given.

There is no requirement that participants be practicing as supervisors during the course as practice elements are built into the training. Participants will need to bring appropriate material for supervision to the course and be willing to participate in discussions and offer their ongoing reflections on the material.

Teaching days start on April 28th, 2018 and end on October 28th, 2018. The course will be held at St Barnabas Counselling Centre in Norwich where there is space for small practice groups as well as a large room for whole class teaching.

Content of the Six Modules

Module 1: (28-29/04/18)

A broad overview of a range of the topics which are further expanded upon in subsequent models. These include: Historical overview of supervision in the helping professions and an introduction to the different elements and core models of the supervisory process. Also included will be: methods of supervision, choosing priorities in supervision, values and ethics, range and flexibility of interventions, transference, countertransference and parallel process, as well as practical skill-focused work.

Module 2: (26-27/05/18)

A review of different models of the supervision process in the literature, models of Developmental Stages through which beginning supervisees progress, and differences in learning styles. Levels of contracting and the Supervisory Working Alliance.

Module 3: (23-24/06/18)

Methods, goals, and interventions in group and individual supervision. Supervising Time-Limited and Brief Term Therapy. Creative interventions in Supervision.

Module 4: (28-29/07/18)

Transference, countertransference, enactments and parallel process in supervision.

Module 5: (29-30/09/18)

Contextual factors and issues of difference (race, culture, disability, etc.). Ethical dilemmas and professional issues.

Module 6: (27-28/10/18)

Student Presentations – a short 20-minute presentation of the candidate’s own interest area in supervision. Peer feedback/assessment.
Methods of evaluation of process and outcome in Supervision.

Further requirements
Two short pieces of written work (each 2000 words) are required, which can be submitted during the course or up to two months after the end of the formal course.

These are:

• ‘My Philosophy of Supervision’.
• Relating Practice and theory: - Experiences of delivering supervision (gained during course practice, or in another setting) related to a model(s) of the supervisory process.

There will be opportunities for group discussion of these written pieces over the duration of the course so that participants can have their questions responded to.

Course attendance at all six modules and completion of the written work leads to the achievement of the Diploma.

Where a module or part of a module is missed an activity to ‘make up’ can be negotiated.

Course requirements:

The course is suitable for qualified practitioners in the helping professions i.e. psychotherapists, counsellors, psychologists, EMDR Practitioners or social workers who are experienced within their profession.

• 2 years post qualification (minimum Diploma in counselling).
• Professional membership i.e. BACP/UKCP/BABCP or equivalent.
  2 satisfactory references.
• The selection for attendance will be by way of an interview to maintain a high standard of quality in the training.

Interviews to be arranged with Sonya Farrell, Director of EMDR Services, to be held near Beccles.

Course fees:

Total: £2,000 (this can be paid in 4 instalments by prior arrangement if required.)

A deposit of £250 is required by January 30th, 2018 to secure a place post interview selection.

Upon full course attendance, completed written work and payment of fees – certificates will be awarded.
