Dear readers,

I’m writing to inform you of a charity fund-raising event.

My piano accompanist, Gary Peacock, and I will be giving a performance of Schubert’s legendary song cycle, Winterreise (Winter Journey) at 4.00pm on Sunday 20th September at The Warehouse Waterloo, 13 Theed Street, London, SE1 8ST in aid of Kids Company. The Warehouse has donated the venue gratis in support of the event.

Kids Company is a registered charity that cares for children whose lives have been blighted by poverty, trauma and abuse. The charity was founded in 1996 by Camila Batmanghelidjh (see the links below to the Kids Company and The Warehouse websites).

One of the ways that Kids Company cares for vulnerable children is by providing educational and confidence-building activities on its Summer Residential Programme. Such activities provide enriching opportunities for emotional and physical development in a safe environment, thereby facilitating the development of positive relationships with friends and supportive adults. This fund-raising event will help to ensure that Kids Company can continue to provide valuable support to abused and traumatised children.

Winterreise was completed in 1828 at the end of Schubert’s short life and is one of the most powerful yet enigmatic masterpieces of Western culture. Lasting approximately seventy minutes, it is a composition of unique emotional depth and psychological intensity – an existential work that remains unsurpassed in the history of song.

I hope that you’ll be able to attend the event in support of a very worthy children’s charity.
