An experiential workshop exploring the benefits of eco-therapy for mental health and emotional well-being

The therapeutic benefits of engaging with nature have been acknowledged for centuries, however, in recent years research has uncovered a mounting body of evidence demonstrating that eco-therapy can help:

  • increase levels of mental and emotional well-being
  • enhance social inclusion, which is vital to the recovery of those living with mental health problems
  • develop healthier lifestyles and environmentally friendly living

Nature-based interventions in the field of psychotherapy are becoming increasingly popular, with many practitioners now recognising the value of integrating aspects of eco-therapy into more traditional forms of therapeutic practice.

This innovative workshop, led by two experienced psychotherapists and trainers, will be looking at a variety of ways in which the natural outdoor environment can be freely and easily accessed for the purpose of improving clients’ mental health and emotional wellbeing.

Held within the peaceful confines of Martineau Gardens, a community woodland space located just two miles from Birmingham city centre, the day will feature a range of experiential nature-based activities, each aimed at exploring the therapeutic benefits of connecting with the natural outdoor environment.

“Eco-therapy represents another treatment choice for service users. The addition of another tool in the toolbox to tackle mental health problems is especially pertinent given the long waiting lists for CBT and the increasing costs of antidepressants.“ - Mind

During the course of the day a number of approaches to nature-based therapy will be explored, including mindfulness in natural outdoor settings and Other-Centred Therapy - a model of psychotherapy founded on outwardly focused Buddhist principles.

This event is aimed at serving both the personal and professional development needs of participants, providing a valuable opportunity to experiment with a range of nature-based therapeutic interventions in a safe, supportive and non-judgmental environment.

The workshop will be facilitated by Sharon Hinsull, MBACP, integrative therapist and associate lecturer in counselling, and Elizabeth Doggart, BABCP accredited supervisor and UKCP registered cognitive behavioural therapist.

This course is recommended for anyone with an interest in exploring eco-therapy techniques for their own personal or professional use, and may be of particular interest to those involved in the fields of counselling and psychotherapy, mental health, life coaching, community and support work, mentoring and health and social care.

Cost: £75 per person (VAT included)

Booking: To register for a place on this course please send an email to info@therapy-and-training.co.uk and full booking details will be forwarded to you.

* Martineau Gardens will be closed to the general public on the day of the workshop, allowing participants to enjoy exclusive and unlimited access to all areas of the gardens, woodland and horticultural spaces.  It is intended that the majority of activities will be conducted outdoors, so everyone will need to bring weather-appropriate clothing and footwear with them on the day.
