About The Foster Practice
Psychotherapy - Counselling - Business Coaching
Modern life brings many challenges – each of us meets these in our own unique way. Occasionally, problems feel insurmountable or a strategy may not be working. We may experience sleep loss, irritability, mood changes such as anger or even feel unwell.
Counselling and coaching are powerful ways to take control. Therapy is tailored and practical to deal with issues such as stress, anxiety and depression.
The work follows ethical guidelines for the following organisations:
- The National Counselling and Psychotherapy Society
- British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy
I work with a strong set of values based around:
- Trust
- Honesty
- Confidentiality
Training, qualifications & experience
BA (Hons) Humanistic and Integrative Counselling & Psychotherapy - First Class Honours
Over the years I have completed specialist training and completed certifications. These are in areas such as:
- Trauma
- Anxiety
- Depression
- Loss
- Crisis intervention
- Fertility
Trauma work is where I have spent most of my working and training time. This is an area that tends to have an impact on other 'co-morbid' conditions such as depression, anxiety and loss, amongst others. As such I have undertaken other training to support these connections such as sleep, personality disorders, understanding impact of SSRI use (anti-depressants) and more. I am happy to talk about any training I have undertaken and explore your needs. I feel it is essential for clients to see the right therapist and if I feel you need other specialist knowledge, I can help you find the right therapist. For example, eating disorders require very specific training and would require a referral.
As part of my work I also specialise in the journey that is often labelled 'infertility' or 'fertility'. This can be an incredibly difficult and, at times, distressing experience. We often focus on the practical aspects of clinical intervention whilst trying to manage our own feelings and conflicts. Counselling is a powerful way to take control - particularly so when making difficult and emotional choices.
Calling a counsellor or coach can be a daunting prospect. You can book a FREE consultation in order to see how I work. I often use both coaching and counselling with clients where appropriate so they can build on re-usable techniques and develop skills for the challenges they face.
I am passionate about mental health and how it is perceived. We all have mental health, just as we all have physical health. When our mental health is compromised, it can be as debilitating as a physical health issue. When we experience stress, anxiety, depression or any other mental health issue it often impacts our physical health also. Life events such as relationship issues, divorce, work problems all can impact our resilience and ability to cope.
Over the years I have developed and delivered stress management workshops, education and 1-1 support for employees and managers including coaching and mentoring. After a lengthy corporate career, I now focus on talking therapies.
My work with clients is 'integrated'. Integrated counsellors draw on many varied theories and interventions depending on the clients needs and goals. One client may work more creatively and another more cognitively.
I consider being a therapist an ongoing process of continued professional development and train on and off throughout the year including formal training courses, publications, staying informed of the latest research in mental health.
Member organisations
school Registered / Accredited
Being registered/accredited with a professional body means an individual must have achieved a substantial level of training and experience approved by their member organisation.
BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred). Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA). Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision. Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training. All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.
The National Counselling and Psychotherapy Society
