About me
Hello. My name is Mara and I am a Counselling Psychologist and EMDR Therapist with a passion for working with and treating trauma-related difficulties, depression, anxiety and dissociative disorders. I am continually astounded at how incredible our brains are and how this can be fundamental to our healing but can also be part of what leads to our suffering - until we get the assistance that we need.
I work collaboratively with you towards healing, whether this be in a short-term interaction or in a longer-term therapy. I practice using an integrative approach to ensure the best fit for the client and our work together. I primarily work using EMDR Therapy due to its efficacy at alleviating distress.
Training, qualifications & experience
I am an HCPC registered Practitioner Psychologist as well as an EMDRIA certified EMDR Therapist with over 10 years of private practice experience. I am further registered with the Health Professions Council South Africa (HPCSA) having practiced in South Africa for 12 years, as well as being a Chartered Member and Associate Fellow of the British Psychological Society.
My undergraduate studies were completed at the University of Sussex in Brighton, whilst my MSc was completed at Roehampton University in London. My training included Psychodynamic and Rogerian approaches to therapy as well as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT). Having been trained in a number of modalities I am able to combine these into an integrative approach. I am also a certified practitioner in Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) Therapy which is a specific psychotherapy that was developed to resolve symptoms resulting from disturbing and unresolved life experiences and is particularly effective for trauma-related difficulties and bereavement.
Member organisations
school Registered / Accredited
Being registered/accredited with a professional body means an individual must have achieved a substantial level of training and experience approved by their member organisation.

The HCPC are an independent, UK-wide health regulator. They set standards of professional training, performance and conduct for 16 professions.
They keep a register of health professionals who meet their standards, and they take action if registered health professionals fall below those standards. They were created by a piece of legislation called the Health Professions Order 2001.
Registration means that a health professional meets national standards for their professional training, performance and conduct.

Additional information
Finding the right therapist for you is the cornerstone of an effective therapeutic experience. It is recommended that you chat with a few different therapists to find the one that you feel is a good fit. For this reason, I offer a free 20 minute consultation with no obligation. This gives us both the opportunity to find out whether I have the specialist skills to help you and whether you will feel comfortable working with me.
