About me

Hi, I'm Sandie and this is 'Umbrella Tree Counselling'.

I am based in Elloughton, East Riding of Yorkshire.

Why the name 'Umbrella Tree' ? I hear you ask.

Well, I am also a Mum of two wonderful boys (now all grown up!). When they were little, we used to go for walks with our lovely chocolate labrador - 'Jessie', into the woods near our home. There was one particular tree that stood by itself, high on top of the hill with wonderful views of the valley below. My boys nicknamed this tree, 'The Umbrella Tree' as it's foliage hung over them, like an umbrella. This tree became a protective, calm space for them to sit, rest for a while, observe, reflect and talk about whatever was foremost in their minds at that time.

Interestingly, the actual 'Umbrella Tree' is considered to be a representative of resilience and growth and is said to capture positive energy in the face of adversity. Having an umbrella tree in your home is advocated by both Chinese and Japenese cultures as a beacon of positivity and promotion of well-being.

This, I love and would say it captures many elements of what I offer as a counsellor.

I provide a safe, warm, quiet and comfortable therapy room in my garden at my home where you can feel able to explore thoughts, feelings and experiences with me.

I hold no limitations on the amount of therapy sessions as every individual is unique and every difficulty or challenge they may be experiencing is holistically their own. There are numerous reasons why therapy can be helpful and it comes in many forms, no one size fits all. I discuss with you what YOU feel you need, you are the best informer of yourself.

I trained and qualified as a Psychotherapeutic Counsellor. However, this training included the study of  other therapy modalities including, but not exhaustive, as Person Centred Therapy, Transactional Analysis, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Gestalt and Humanistic.

I am a passionate believer in the power of therapy. I have sat in the client chair too and know, from a client perspective, how this can feel and how it can make a difference. The therapeutic relationship is key, we work together, at your pace, as you need.

I am a warm, empathetic therapist with decades of experience supporting individuals facing adversity of multiple dimensions. Being such an experienced nurse has seen me a part of people's lives during their most harrowing and challenging of times. Ranging from feeling anxious about minor surgery, to the loss of a loved one, or in receipt of a life changing diagnosis. The pandemic opened up a whole new world of trauma, sadness and tragedy. However, it also encompassed hope, resilience and future. It cannot be understated how this experience has moved and taken me forward in my therapeutic capacity and increased my drive to help all the more.

I provide a free, first telephone consultation - then take it from there.

Sessions are face to face at my home.

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

Accredited register membership

British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).
