About me

Hello! I'm Samantha, and I'm a Person Centred therapist and registered member of the BACP (British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy). I have almost 3 decades of experience working on a one to one basis with people who are struggling with ill mental health, and more recently studied for 3 years to become a therapeutic counsellor. I am also the creator of Express Counselling.

I appreciate how scary it can be to not feel quite like yourself and to take the decision to reach out for help. With this in mind, I offer a counselling experience that will give you both the time and space you need to unpack what is happening for you right now, and we can explore your story together, at a pace that suits you.

I offer in-person counselling from a counselling room (and sensory room) in The Riverside Centre, located just north of the city of York. It is accessible via short walk from the town centre or via bus (number 5 or 13). There is also free parking available.

I offer both short term and long term therapy, face to face, online or via telephone.

Training, qualifications & experience

I have experience of working with adults (18 - 90 years) as an In-House Counsellor for a large NHS medical group and also within a college setting (further and higher education) - working with people from 16 years of age. In these settings I have worked with people who have long term or ongoing medical issues and people who were diagnosed with depression, low mood, anxiety, struggling with emotional issues, abuse, baby loss, family issues, panic attacks, suicidal ideation, faith based issues, stress, rape, neurodiversity, addiction, trauma, low self esteem and with people who knew they just needed to talk through how they were feeling, knowing they just didnt feel themselves.

I began my counselling training 16 years ago via the Open University (introduction to counselling, 2010) and completed a 3 year course to qualify with a Diploma in Therapeutic Counselling in 2024.

I am currently studying a Masters in Counselling, Psychology and Supervision.

I work ethically and professionally, as a registered member of the BACP, and as such agree to abide by their ethical framework for good practice in counselling: www.bacp.com.

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred). Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA). Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision. Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training. All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Wheelchair user access
Wheelchair user access

Wheelchair-accessible premises should have step-free access for wheelchair users and individuals who are unable to climb stairs. If a Counsellor's premises aren't step-free, they may offer alternative services such as telephone/web-based appointments, home visits, or meeting clients in different location, so you can choose the option that suits you best.

You can contact the Counsellor to discuss the options available.

Under the Equality Act 2010 service providers have a duty to make reasonable adjustments to ensure that individuals with disabilities can access their service. You can read more about reasonable adjustments to help you to access services on the CAB website.

The Riverside Centre has good accessibility, however, we will need to meet in a space downstairs, as access to the sensory room may not be available.
