FdA Therapeutic Counselling, MBACP

About me

Hello, I’m Ryan.

I offer integrative counselling and psychotherapy for adults, providing a warm, accepting and confidential space where you can slow things down, explore what is happening in your life and begin to make sense of whatever may have brought you to therapy.

People come to counselling for many different reasons. You may be experiencing anxiety, low mood, relationship difficulties, grief or loss, low self-esteem, a period of change, or simply a feeling that something in your life does not feel quite right. Sometimes there is a clear reason for seeking support; at other times it can be much harder to put into words.

Whatever brings you to therapy, I believe you do not need to arrive with everything worked out.

My way of working is integrative, with person-centred and psychodynamic approaches at the heart of my practice. This means that our relationship is an important part of the work. I aim to offer a space in which you feel genuinely heard, accepted and able to explore yourself without judgement.

Alongside what is happening in your life now, we may also become curious about earlier experiences, relationships and patterns that continue to influence how you experience yourself and others today. Therapy can allow us to notice these patterns with greater awareness and compassion rather than simply trying to get rid of difficult feelings.

I don't see therapy as somebody else having the answers for you. I believe we each have an inherent capacity to move towards healing, growth and greater wholeness when the right conditions are present. My role is to walk alongside you, helping create the space in which that process can unfold.

I also have a particular interest in the deeper dimensions of psychological experience, including meaning, identity, spirituality, non-ordinary states of consciousness and significant experiences that can sometimes be difficult to understand or integrate within everyday life.

You don't need to identify as spiritual or have any particular beliefs to work with me. My approach is led by you and by what feels important in your life.

Above all, I hope therapy with me feels human. A genuine relationship between two people in which there is space for honesty, curiosity, vulnerability and, where appropriate, humour too.

Training, qualifications & experience

I am a qualified integrative counsellor and have completed a Foundation Degree in Counselling and Psychotherapy, with my core professional training grounded primarily in person-centred and psychodynamic approaches.

I am currently undertaking a Master’s in Counselling and Psychotherapy Practice at Bath Spa University, continuing to develop my academic, clinical and reflective practice at postgraduate level.

Alongside my counselling practice and postgraduate study, I am also undertaking a three-year professional training with Grof Legacy Training Nordic in Grof® Breathwork and psychedelic-assisted therapy.

My training and ongoing professional development include:

  • Master’s in Counselling and Psychotherapy Practice - ongoing
  • Diploma in Grof® Breathwork and psychedelic-assisted therapy
  • Foundation Degree in Counselling and Psychotherapy
  • Level 3 Counselling Skills
  • Level 2 Counselling Skills
  • Integrative counselling training
  • Person-centred therapy
  • Psychodynamic theory and practice
  • Attachment and relational approaches
  • Trauma-informed practice
  • Working with transference and countertransference
  • Personal development and reflective practice

This specialist training reflects a longstanding interest in transpersonal psychology and non-ordinary states of consciousness, including how profound emotional, psychological and spiritual experiences can be understood and integrated.

I continue to undertake regular supervision, personal development and professional training as part of my commitment to ethical and reflective practice.

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred). Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA). Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision. Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training. All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

Accredited register membership

British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy
Accredited Register Scheme

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

This therapist has indicated that they belong to an Accredited Register.

I believe that finding the right therapist is an important part of counselling. The therapeutic relationship matters, and it is important that you feel comfortable enough with the person you choose to begin exploring what may be very personal parts of your life.

Our early sessions therefore give us an opportunity to get to know one another, explore what has brought you to counselling and think together about what you would like from therapy.

There is no expectation that you need to know exactly what you want to work on before beginning. Sometimes understanding what is happening is itself part of the therapeutic process.
