About me

Deciding to refer yourself for therapy, and choosing a therapist, is an incredibly big decision. Over the years, I have found that a lot of my clients have not always had the best experience with practitioners, and this can cause significant anxiety when deciding to access therapy again. Whether you are coming to therapy for the first time, or you have had therapy before, I respect the care and time that is needed to find the right person for you. It is important for you to feel safe and valued in order for you to then explore the challenges you may face. I have worked with people struggling with their mental health for over 16 years and I am incredibly thankful to all of the clients who have felt able to place their trust in me.

Alongside private practice, I have worked in a variety of NHS settings that have enabled me to develop and enhance my therapeutic skills. I specialise in supporting people who have experienced trauma in their life, however I have substantial experience working with other mental health challenges, such as: OCD; depression; psychosis; low self-esteem; and anxiety difficulties.

As I was trained to embrace a pluralistic approach, I am able to draw upon several therapeutic approaches where appropriate. The therapeutic models I am experienced with are: Cognitive Behavioural Therapy; Dialectical Behaviour Therapy; Person-Centred Counselling; and Compassion Focussed Therapy. I am also experienced in delivering Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) Therapy.

If you would like to find out more about me and how I might be able to support you, please do not hesitate to make contact and book a free initial consultation.

(I also offer supervision for trainee and qualified practitioners. Please do not hesitate to contact me to discuss the details of this service further).

Client 1 testimonial:

“I was referred to Robert following the death of my son when I was suffering from a combination of grief, anxiety and depression. Small every day tasks had become a challenge and I had reached a point where I couldn’t focus my attention for any length of time and my work was therefore impacted also. From the very first call I connected with Robert. He showed such empathy, without pity, and set me challenges that, with hindsight, seem so small but at the time were monumental. Over the period of time I was with Robert his encouragement and support restored my self-esteem and allowed me to adapt to my new life. I still use some of the tools he shared with me and will continue to do so. It was so very important to me that we both acknowledged I would never be the same person but that I could eventually learn to live without my son’s physical presence and I am immensely proud of what I have achieved. The relationship between a client and their counsellor is unique and quite special. Robert’s honesty and empathy and, indeed, his invaluable sense of humour literally changed my life, and I will be forever grateful to him”.

Client 2 testimonial:

“Working with Rob was not the first time I sought therapeutic support. It was however the first time I felt truly seen and understood. The way he created a space that felt safe through regular checkins, reflections and revisiting the terms of our working together frequently is something I really valued and have learned so much from. Rob helped me trust the process by explaining why we were approaching issues in such a way, this was really helpful to my inquisitive mind. I couldn’t recommend his services more”

Client 3 testimonial:

Working with Rob was fantastic. He provided me with a toolkit to deal with the immediate issues I was facing and we progressed to unpicking unhelpful core beliefs and behaviours. He showed a great understanding of when to challenge me and when to console me which is a testament to both his compassion and his competence. I hope I don't need therapy any time soon but if I do I will readily work with Rob again.
