About me
Hello, my name is Peter Williamson and thank you for contacting me at The Counselling Directory.
I can understand why you may have arrived at this page. Sometimes, we can feel overwhelmed by life’s circumstances or that things aren’t feeling quite ‘on track’, or how we’d like them to be. We may be affected by low mood, depression or anxiety, or be encountering difficulties in managing life’s challenges. These may involve our work, relationships, how we cope with loss or change, or how we relate to others.
I appreciate that you may be feeling nervous and apprehensive about starting therapy. Whatever the origins of your discomfort, I am ready to offer you a safe (confidential, non-judgmental) space where you will be really heard, understood and have an opportunity to explore what is troubling you.
Working together in this way will provide opportunities for you to achieve personal discovery, growth and change. I will aim to empower you to navigate through your challenges, make informed decisions in pursuit of your goals, and alleviate your discomfort. I have proven experience of working in this way with many clients in a range of public and private sector settings, including the NHS, my private practice, charities and the hospice movement.
If you choose to work with me I will strive to honour your courage and the trust you place in me as we embark on this venture together.
Training, qualifications & experience
I began my career working in the corporate and academic worlds in clinical research and drug development. My passion and interest in people led me to change careers in 2010 and retrain and qualify as a counsellor at Warwick University where I gained a First Class BA honours degree in Person-Centred Counselling and Psychotherapy.
Since then, I have continued to train and develop my therapeutic skills and experience to include Person-Centred Experiential Counselling for Depression (PCE-CfD) at The Metanoia Institute, and Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT), completing my foundation teacher training at The Oxford Mindfulness Centre (a not-for-profit organisation working in a collaborative partnership with the University of Oxford).
Both of these therapeutic approaches are approved by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) for use in the UK.
Member organisations
school Registered / Accredited
Being registered/accredited with a professional body means an individual must have achieved a substantial level of training and experience approved by their member organisation.

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred). Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA). Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision. Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training. All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.
Accredited register membership

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).
This therapist has indicated that they belong to an Accredited Register.

Further information
My work is fundamentally underpinned by my core training and qualifications as a person-centred or humanistic therapist. This approach sits comfortably with my personal way of being and philosophy. I also work integratively, where I call on other areas of my training and experience such as Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT), or Counselling for Depression (PCE-CfD) where this might be helpful. I am also trained in Complex Grief and Bereavement and work with people experiencing all kinds of loss in their lives.
