About me

Mels Space Birth Trauma Counselling

"At least you have a healthy baby."

If you have heard this—or found yourself repeating it just to get through the day—know that having a healthy baby is the most important thing, but it is not the only important thing.

Are you just "getting on with it" but pushing all of the confusing thoughts and signs of trauma deep inside to get through each day?

There is nothing else quite like carrying the heavy, exhausting weight of birth trauma. You might be enduring flashbacks, anxiety, hypervigilance or a sense of detachment and perhaps believing that this is your "new normal". Living with the aftermath of a traumatic birth is not "just what you have to do".

I am here to assure you that "surviving your birth" is not the standard you should have to aspire to. You deserve to heal and thrive.

Whether your birth experience was weeks ago or years ago, the short- and long-term effects of birth trauma are real. But they do not have to be permanent.

How I Work:  I have the heart and passion of a Doula, and use the Science of EMDR

I’m Mel, and at Mels Space, I provide specialist individual counselling for adults navigating the aftermath of birth trauma. I am not just a therapist who reads about this in textbooks; my expertise is deeply rooted in real-world experience and training:

The Doula Insight: Having trained and practised as a Birth Doula, I understand the maternity system, the physiology of birth, and the specific ways the system can leave parents feeling disempowered, unheard or unsafe.

The EMDR Expertise: To help you actually process and move past the trauma, I use EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing). This isn't just talk therapy; it is a powerful, evidence-based treatment recommended by the NHS specifically for trauma recovery. It helps take the "sting" out of the memories so they no longer control your present.

You Don't Have to Do This Alone
Birth trauma can make you feel incredibly isolated, even in a room full of people. In my practice, there is no judgment, no toxic positivity, and no expectation for you to "look on the bright side." There is only safe, dedicated space for you to process what happened and reclaim your life.

It’s time to take care of you.
