About me

About me

Sometimes life begins to feel harder than it should. You may notice patterns repeating in relationships, anxiety that will not settle, or a sense that past experiences are still shaping your present.

I’m Dr Marta de Madariaga López, a Chartered Consultant Clinical Psychologist with over 25 years’ experience in the NHS and private practice. I work with adults and young people (15+) who want to understand and move beyond the effects of trauma, anxiety, depression, and difficult life experiences.

Many people who come to therapy are thoughtful and capable individuals who have reached a point where something no longer feels sustainable. Therapy offers a space to slow down, make sense of what is happening, and begin to create meaningful and lasting change.

Alongside therapy, I also provide clinical supervision for psychologists and other health professionals.

I currently offer online individual therapy, intensive therapy programmes, and supervision.

How I work

My approach is collaborative and structured, while remaining flexible to each person’s needs and pace. Rather than focusing only on symptoms, we explore the patterns and experiences that may be maintaining distress.

I integrate a range of evidence-based approaches, including Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), attachment-informed therapy, compassion-focused work, mindfulness, and cognitive behavioural therapy. These approaches are adapted to the individual rather than applied in a rigid way.

In my experience, therapy often works best when approached as a short programme of focused work rather than isolated sessions, so I usually suggest beginning with a block of sessions to build continuity and depth.

Getting started

The first step is a free 20-minute consultation. This gives us the opportunity to briefly meet, discuss what you are looking for, and see whether working together feels right.

If we decide to proceed, the first full session focuses on understanding your background, current concerns, and goals for therapy. Together we then agree on the most helpful way forward.

Intensive therapy

In addition to weekly therapy, I offer intensive therapy programmes. These involve longer or more concentrated sessions over a shorter period of time and can be particularly helpful when working with trauma or when people wish to make more focused progress.

Insurance

I work with clients funded through AXA Health, Bupa, WPA, and VitalityHealth.

Training, qualifications & experience

I specialise in utilizing a wide range of psychological therapies to alleviate emotional distress across the lifespan, with a particular focus on climate anxiety and EMDR intensives. My training spans various therapeutic modalities, including CBT, Compassion-Focused Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Mindfulness, Systemic Therapy, EMDR, Psychodynamic approaches, Schema Therapy, and Attachment Theory. I integrate these approaches to tailor treatment to your unique needs and experiences, always grounding our work in a strong therapeutic alliance.

While I have spent much of my career providing in-person therapy and value this approach, I now also offer online interventions. I see the use of technology as a powerful tool to connect in new and meaningful ways, providing greater flexibility, accessibility, and creativity in helping you achieve your goals. It's important to ensure you have the necessary technology and a secure, confidential, and comfortable environment for our online sessions.

I have a particular interest in exploring both internal and external factors that may influence your current emotional state. Internally, this might include cognitive processes such as memory, attention, planning, and organizational skills, as well as sleep, hormonal balance, pain, nutrition, physical activity, and self-soothing abilities. Externally, factors such as climate change, trauma, challenging relationships, work stress, and social dynamics may also play a significant role.

As an Expert Witness, I am well-versed in personal injury claims, neuropsychology, and court proceedings involving child protection issues.
