About me
My name is Lucy. I am a qualified Counsellor and Psychotherapist (PGDip) and I work with adults who are experiencing emotional distress linked to a wide range of difficulties, including people struggling with stress and anxiety. I also offer a number of speciality areas.
Whether you are looking for a therapist to help you with something specific or you need some general support, I will do my best to help you.
Areas of speciality
Loss and Bereavement - are you finding it hard to cope following on from the loss of a loved one? Maybe you have lost a child, a partner or a parent. Or perhaps you have lost a job, a pet or are recently separated or divorced. Perhaps you feel guilty or can't make sense of it all. I can support you through the grieving process, including experience of supporting people affected by complex grief.
Relational Trauma - do you keep getting stuck in unhealthy relationships? Do you struggle to know who you are outside of your relationships? Perhaps you are affected by a complex family background or estrangement. Do you need support to build a firm sense of your own identity? I can help you recognise and overcome unhealthy relational patterns with yourself and with others and the complex emotions that often come with those, boosting your overall quality of life.
Childhood Trauma - are you affected by things that happened to you as a child? Perhaps you were neglected or abused? Perhaps you have never talked about these things. You might even feel responsible. I have experience of supporting adults to process/recover from childhood trauma and abuse.
Self Esteem - are you struggling with low self esteem? Feelings of worthlessness? Do you compare yourself less favourable to others? I can help you to build your self esteem which can positively impact across all areas of your life.
Women's Issues - are you affected by women's issues? Perhaps you are perimenopausal/menopausal? Are you struggling with hot flushes? Night sweats? Feeling foggy? High anxiety? Panic attacks? Angry outbursts? Paranoia? Aches and pains? Loss of confidence? I can support you as you navigate this life stage.
I appreciate that considering therapy can be daunting, but I am a warm, calm and friendly person. I will support you through the entire therapeutic process.
Training, qualifications & experience
I'm educated to Master's level (PG Dip) and I am passionate about social justice and have a lifetime experience in supporting people who are vulnerable, having worked across a number of fields including education, community development and both generalist and specialist counselling settings.
My training in integrative psychotherapy means that I can draw from a wide range of theories, including person-centred, cognitive behavioural (CBT), psychodynamic, solution-focused brief therapy and compassion-focused therapy to support your needs. I will suggest different techniques according to your unique experience. For example, if you want help to stop your panic attacks I will suggest some CBT options for you to try; whereas if you want to process some childhood trauma I will talk to you about the possibility of some inner child work.
Clients who have experienced childhood trauma and those who have experienced abuse have benefitted from my professional support; as have clients who experience relationship problems, estrangement, OCD, divorce, grief, loss and bereavement, health issues, work related issues, bullying, loneliness, low self-esteem, stress, depression/low mood, anxiety and panic attacks.
Alongside my education and work experience; my own personal life experience, including my own experience of being in therapy, influences my work with clients. I know first hand that reaching out to a therapist for professional help when you might be feeling vulnerable isn't always easy, but also how powerful having someone truly listen to you can be - therapy changed my life. I am deeply committed therefore to utilising my professional knowledge and skills to help you whilst sitting alongside you and truly listening to you and offering you a deep sense of felt empathy - as you explore what matters for you in the safe and confidential space that I provide.
Recent professional development/training has included equality and diversity, domestic violence and abuse, safeguarding and autism.
Member organisations
BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred). Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA). Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision. Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training. All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.
Accredited register membership
The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).
This therapist has indicated that they belong to an Accredited Register.

Further information
I offer an initial free telephone appointment so that I can find more about what brings you to therapy and whether I feel I can help you and there will be time for you to ask me any questions you may have and to decide whether you feel I might be the right therapist for you. There will be no pressure to continue with therapy if it doesn't feel right for you.
If you do decide to go ahead after our initial telephone appointment, we can book your first session.
The first session is a bit different to future sessions because I set aside some time for us to agree how we will work together. After this, there will be time for you to talk about what you want to talk about as we begin our journey together. I will support you throughout the entire process and you can expect to feel comfortable talking with me.
