About me
I offer One Plus therapy. We will focus on your most pressing concern right now, and we will aim to end the session having created an action plan which you can then put into practice. This one session may be enough to help you move forward and there is no pressure to come back for further sessions, however, this is always an option.
I have found that this way of working can be helpful for families and friends of people with brain injury or significant physical illness, as highly focused psychological therapy at the time that it's needed helps people to draw on their own strengths and resources to help themselves and the person they love to thrive in a very difficult situation.
If you would find it more helpful to arrange a regular series of sessions this is also possible and can work very well if you would like ongoing support.
The main approaches I draw on are Acceptance and Commitment Therapy and Compassion Focused Therapy. Both these approaches are firmly rooted in science and supported by evidence. They focus on making changes in the present rather than going over past experiences (unless these are having a particular influence on current difficulties), and they make use of mind-body connections to bring about change.
Training, qualifications & experience
As an experienced Clinical Psychologist, I have worked for many years with people with brain injuries, neurological conditions including stroke, and chronic health conditions in a wide range of settings: in hospitals, in rehabilitation facilities and at home. I am currently leading a Clinical Psychology service in a large London hospital and have past experience of working on medico-legal cases.
In addition to my three-year Doctorate in Clinical Psychology, I have undertaken a two-year post-doctoral training in Clinical Neuropsychology, which means that I have an in-depth understanding of brain functioning and approaches that help to optimise it.
Member organisations
Being registered/accredited with a professional body means an individual must have achieved a substantial level of training and experience approved by their member organisation.
The HCPC are an independent, UK-wide health regulator. They set standards of professional training, performance and conduct for 16 professions.
They keep a register of health professionals who meet their standards, and they take action if registered health professionals fall below those standards. They were created by a piece of legislation called the Health Professions Order 2001.
Registration means that a health professional meets national standards for their professional training, performance and conduct.
