About me

Lesley Butlin Counselling & Psychotherapy Services:

Before I list my experience and professional qualifications I want to recognise how difficult it is to pick a Therapist from this list of well qualified professionals. I always suggest that new clients, arrange to see me for a one off appointment.  I believe what really makes the difference to how you feel, is if you are comfortable and happy with me and what I offer in the therapeutic relationship.

I am a qualified & registered Counsellor & Psychotherapist, to work with adults, young people and their families.

For over 40 years I have been working in the field of mental health, helping people feel more confident, happier and able to face the difficulties that life throws at us all.

I have  specialist training and accreditation in trauma work, not just the obvious big T trauma's of assault, fires and car accidents. I also work effectively with small t trauma, those life long issues of being bullied, not feeling good enough or phobias of blood or dogs for example. Using  Eye movement desensitisation and reprocessing (EMDR) therapy is a a rather magical way of bringing about sometimes quite unbelievable change.

As an experienced psychotherapist I am able to work with any issues that affect your emotional well being and no issue is too small if it prevents you living the life you want to live.

I am happy to work online via zoom or in person in my office in NG24.

The list below identifies the breadth of problems I have experienced of working with, however this is not exhaustive.

  • anxiety
  • panic attacks
  • trauma
  • phobias
  • lack of assertiveness
  • grief and complex grief.
  • depression
  • emotional eating issues of all descriptions
  • stress related difficulties
  • family relationship issues
  • confidence for speeches, exams etc

Training, qualifications & experience

Therapy: I am a qualified Counsellor and a United Kingdom Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP) registered Psychotherapist for Adults, Children and Young People and have run a successful private counselling and psychotherapy practice since 1995.

Currently EMDR is the therapy of choice for treating trauma following traffic accidents / childhood trauma / phobias and PTSD. If you are holding emotions form a divorce, separation, bereavement and notice those feelings become overwhelming, you may be having a trauma response. EMDR is now available online or in person with myself,

Alongside traditional weekly or bi-weekly therapy, I am passionate about offering intensive or condensed EMDR therapy

One of the most significant advantages of intensive EMDR is the potential for rapid progress. In weekly sessions of therapy, it may take several weeks or months to work through a traumatic or challenging event. In contrast, EMDR intensives condense the timeline into a few hours,  which helps you reach your goals and alleviate trauma symptoms more quickly. Intensive EMDR can be used to treat any issue grief, phobias, confidence issues, anxiety, and panic.  Intensives are effective at working through current issues, such as relationship difficulties or fears  as well as issues stemming from your past.

In May, July and September 2025 I am offering intensive therapy retreat days, if you are struggling with anxiety, feeling overwhelmed, plagued by past trauma's contact me for further details.

I am currently a Consultant in Training so can offer supervision to EMDR practitioners.

I am happy to supervise both trainee counsellors and qualified counsellors, therapists,  within the mental health field, NHS or private practice.

I am approved by the following training establishments: IATE, SPTI.

I currently offer individual and group supervision. I currently have a space in a Child and Adolescent Supervision Group.

I also offer CPD groups meeting monthly online, for therapists wanting to discuss clinical issues, current research, personal or ethical issues. I have space in a Monday morning group if this interests you contact me.

If you are want to make the first step please contact me to discuss your therapeutic or supervisory needs.

In 2025:Intensive Therapy Days @ Purusha Retreat

Alongside my co facilitator Jordan McPhail.

We are offering Therapeutic Retreats using EMDR therapy, focussing on, thriving,  shredding old memories, beliefs and anxieties whilst also spending time outside in nature.

What actually happens at an EMDR Therapy Intensive?
You’ll work with two experienced therapists in a small group setting—but don’t worry, you won’t need to share your personal experiences. Instead, through guided EMDR techniques, your brain will process and reframe distressing memories, allowing you to finally move forward.
Imagine feeling lighter, less stuck, and more at ease—without spending months in therapy.Intensive therapy is suitable for working with anxiety, confidence issues, phobias, grief issues, attachment and relationship difficulties. If you feel your difficulties are in a different area, Jordan or Lesley will be very happy to arrange a call with you to discuss if this Intensive retreat would suit you at this time.

Our next intensives are in May, July, and September. Secure your spot today:

Please email: mail@lesleybutlin.co.uk for further details.

Further information

When you are choosing a professional to help you, at probably a difficult time it can be confusing with all the different types of therapy on offer. Do I need a counsellor, a psychotherapist or a coach?

I personally believe that my background and professional qualifications underpin the help I can give you however it is the relationship between you and myself that will help you to heal.

Therefore I usually suggest starting with a 20 minute complimentary session, to meet, discuss what you want from therapy at this time and decide if we want to work together.

If this is something you would like to arrange please email me - mail@lesleybutlin.co.uk or call 07554020227 today.
