About me

You may find yourself caught in patterns you recognise but find tricky to change: being hard on yourself, trying to please other people, feeling responsible for too much, overthinking, or expecting rejection even when you want closeness.

You may be carrying the effects of difficult or traumatic experiences, feeling ashamed or “not enough,” or finding that relationship difficulties keep returning in different forms. Perhaps you are tired of coping alone, but unsure where to start or how to explain what has been difficult.

I am Dr Kyra Thompson, an HCPC-registered Counselling Psychologist. I offer individual therapy for adults aged 16+ in person in Stirling, and online across the UK.

You do not need a diagnosis, a referral, or the right words before getting in touch. Therapy can begin with uncertainty, a conversation, and some space to be curious about what has brought you here.

How I work

I work integratively, which means I draw on different evidence-based approaches while adapting therapy to you rather than expecting you to fit a particular model. The therapeutic relationship is central to my work: I aim to create a space where you can feel listened to, understood and able to explore at a pace that feels manageable.

My approach is trauma-informed and relational. I am particularly interested in how earlier experiences, relationships and ways of coping can shape how we see ourselves and others. Together, we can explore patterns such as self-criticism, shame, people-pleasing, emotional disconnection, fear of rejection or difficulty trusting others.

I draw on person-centred, cognitive behavioural, schema and compassion-focused approaches where helpful. These approaches can offer different ways of making sense of your experiences and developing more supportive ways of relating to yourself and others. We will keep checking in about what feels useful, what does not, and what you would like our work to focus on.

I also pay attention to the wider context of your life. Your experiences may be shaped by relationships, identity, culture, work, social pressures and other circumstances around you. Therapy does not need to reduce what you are going through to a diagnosis or a symptom list in order to take it seriously.

What therapy may involve

Early sessions are an opportunity to get to know what has brought you to therapy, what you would like to be different and whether working together feels like a good fit.

There is no expectation to tell your whole story at once. We can take time to understand what feels most pressing, explore the patterns that may be keeping you stuck, and consider small, meaningful changes that feel realistic in your life.

Therapy is collaborative. You are welcome to bring questions, uncertainty and feedback into the space. We will check in about the pace of therapy, how it is feeling and whether the work remains helpful to you.

Training, qualifications & experience

I am an HCPC-registered Counselling Psychologist with a Doctorate in Counselling Psychology from Glasgow Caledonian University. My training has included work across a range of third sector and organisational settings, alongside independent practice.

I work from an integrative, relational and trauma-informed perspective. My clinical interests include trauma, shame, self-esteem, relationship difficulties and longstanding patterns that can leave people feeling stuck, disconnected or overly critical of themselves.

My work is informed by psychological research and evidence, alongside a commitment to taking each person’s lived experience and personal understanding seriously.

Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC)

The HCPC are an independent, UK-wide health regulator. They set standards of professional training, performance and conduct for 16 professions.

They keep a register of health professionals who meet their standards, and they take action if registered health professionals fall below those standards. They were created by a piece of legislation called the Health Professions Order 2001.

Registration means that a health professional meets national standards for their professional training, performance and conduct.
