About me

About Me
Hi, I’m Jim.
I know that taking the first step towards counselling can feel daunting. Reaching out for help isn’t always easy, but you don’t have to face things on your own.

From my own experience, I know that asking for help isn’t a sign of weakness—it’s often the first step towards lasting change.

I believe that being heard, understood, and accepted without judgement can be the beginning of real change. My role is to provide a safe, confidential space where you can talk openly, explore what’s happening in your life, and work towards feeling more like yourself again.

Alongside my professional training, I bring lived experience into my practice. Having found recovery from alcohol addiction myself, I understand how difficult life can become when you’re struggling with your mental health. I also know that recovery and change are possible because I’ve lived that journey. My own experiences have shaped the counsellor I am today and allow me to connect with people with empathy, honesty, and genuine understanding.

Because of both my personal and professional experience, I have a particular interest in supporting people experiencing addiction, recovery, anxiety, depression, stress, low self-esteem, grief, and the emotional impact these challenges can have on individuals and their families.

I work with pre-teens, teenagers, and adults of all ages. People come to counselling for many different reasons. You may be struggling with anxiety, low mood, relationship difficulties, work pressures, grief, addiction, or simply feeling stuck or overwhelmed. Whatever has brought you here, we’ll work together at a pace that feels comfortable for you.

My approach is person-centred, collaborative, and holistic. Rather than focusing only on the problem, I look at you as a whole person and how different parts of your life influence one another. I don’t believe in telling people what they should do. Instead, I’ll work alongside you, helping you gain insight, build resilience, and find a way forward that feels right for you.

I aim to offer a calm, approachable, and non-judgemental space where you can feel comfortable being yourself. I believe that a trusting therapeutic relationship is at the heart of meaningful change, and that healing begins when you feel safe enough to be open and honest.

Whether you’re coming to counselling for the first time or returning after a break, you’ll be met with warmth, compassion, and respect. You don’t need to have all the answers before getting in touch. Sometimes the hardest part is simply making that first contact.

I offer 50-minute counselling sessions face to face, online via secure video, or by telephone if you prefer the comfort of your own home. Evening appointments are available from 5pm.

If you’d like to know more or arrange an initial conversation, please get in touch. I’d be happy to answer any questions and help you decide whether I’m the right counsellor for you.

Registered / Accredited

Being registered/accredited with a professional body means an individual must have achieved a substantial level of training and experience approved by their member organisation.

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred). Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA). Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision. Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training. All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.
