About me

I'm Jacob, a counsellor based in rural Somerset, just outside of Weston and Burnham. Working with adults, adolescents (13+), and couples.

If you've ever described yourself as "so OCD" , the one who can't switch off, can't stop checking, can't silence the voice that says you haven't done enough , I probably understand what's driving that better than you'd expect. That relentless inner critic, the guilt when you rest, the intrusive thoughts you're ashamed to say out loud. Most of the time that's not a disorder. It's something you learned, and it can change.

I work with anxiety, depression, trauma, relationship difficulties, low self-esteem, and the kind of perfectionism that looks like high functioning from the outside and feels like exhaustion from the inside. I also work with couples navigating betrayal, communication breakdowns, and the patterns that keep repeating despite both people trying.

I work with ADHD and autism , in adolescents and adults. I'm not a diagnostic specialist, but I work with what a diagnosis means for the person living with it. Sometimes that diagnosis is the missing piece that finally makes everything make sense. Sometimes it becomes another way of saying "this is just how I am" about patterns that could actually change. I'm interested in both , what the diagnosis explains and what it doesn't. What it gives you and what it might be costing you.

My approach is rooted in Transactional Analysis and CBT , they share the same premise that early beliefs shape how you feel and behave now. Where I go further is into why those beliefs formed, who installed them, and what keeps them running. I'm not interested in giving you coping strategies for a problem we haven't understood yet. That's paracetamol for a broken bone. I'd rather we find out what's actually going on.

That means therapy with me tends to be longer-term and relational. I'll challenge you , respectfully, but directly. I won't just nod and ask how that makes you feel. I also won't pretend I have all the answers. What I will do is show up consistently, take you seriously, and work alongside you until something genuinely shifts.

I offer a free introductory call. It doesn't make sense to commit to working together if we're not a good fit , better to find that out before you've paid for a session.

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA). Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision. Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training. All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.
