No matter what our age, whether adult, adolescent or child, we can find ourselves, or our children, stuck in unproductive, unsatisfying or even self-destructive patterns of feeling and behaviour. These patterns of thinking, feeling and behaving are not chosen or established at a conscious level, they are developed outside of our awareness and can be both confusing and distressing.
We find ourselves thinking things like 'why does this keep happening' or 'here we go again' Sometimes we feel that no matter what we do to try and change things we end up going ‘round and round’ in circles.
Typically, children struggle to put words to their feelings or to make sense of the issues that underlie them, and their communication often comes in the form of behaviour. Teenagers can find themselves facing many emotional difficulties which can intrude upon both their school and home life. For parents and carers, watching their child or teen struggle in these ways can be both frightening and distressing.
As the problems we or our children experience are established outside of awareness, the cure must reach into the same area. This can be difficult to do as we often resist the things that we most need to face because they are painful, and we have often developed many strategies to defend against them.
Whether through talking, play or creative activities, I can help you or your child or teen identify and make sense of the thought processes and patterns that underpin many different problems. It is then possible to make the necessary changes to break free of old patterns and bring about lasting change.
The work depends on me being able to develop a deep understanding of your experience. Not only what you are feeling and thinking, but what you are sensing and intuiting. Many of our experiences, including our traumas, are evident in the way we hold our bodies and the sensations we experience within our bodies. The therapy room becomes a microcosm in which the nuances of our relationship, me as therapist, you as client, become a window through which we can get a clearer understanding of relationships with pivotal and influential people from the past, such as parents and grandparents. For this reason, I only work face-to face and sessions are at least weekly.
