About me
Hello and welcome. My name is Gillian, and I am here to offer you compassionate support in a confidential, safe space where together we can explore whatever it is you would like to change.
Deciding to have therapy and then finding the right therapist for you are both incredibly important decisions. I therefore offer a free 30-minute telephone consultation as an opportunity for you to decide whether you will feel comfortable working with me, and for me to make sure that I am the best person to provide you with the support you need.
I believe we all have the capacity to grow and become the best version of ourselves, and I will always seek to provide you with caring and compassionate support while, together, we look to explore and resolve any difficulties you might be facing.
How I work
I am a qualified integrative Humanistic Counsellor and a registered member of the British Association of Counsellors and Psychotherapists (BACP). My training is in a combination of Person Centred, Gestalt, and Existential modalities so that I am able to provide an integrated offering that can be tailored to suit your specific needs.
These three approaches are united in their recognition that the quality of the therapist-client relationship is THE most important thing for therapy to be successful. Each approach also has its unique characteristics: Person Centred therapy believes we are all born with a drive and capacity for personal growth and self-actualization; Gestalt therapy focuses on the here and now, and immediate thoughts, feelings and behaviour to better understand how we relate to others and to day-to-day situations and events; whilst the Existential approach explores some of the most fundamental questions regarding our existence, for example: "Who am I?" “What is my purpose in life?” and “How do I deal with my own mortality?” .
Depending on your needs, I will tailor the therapy to suit your unique requirements. If you like expressing yourself creatively, we can use creativity in our work together. We can also integrate mindfulness, meditation and visualisation techniques into the therapy sessions if this is something that appeals to you.
Whatever your reasons for seeking support, I will provide you with a calm and welcoming environment so that you can safely explore your thoughts, feelings and beliefs without fear of judgement. Above all, I will endeavour to build trust and offer empathy, honesty, and respect while I help you to work through your issues and concerns.
Training, qualifications & experience
I am a graduate of Dunamis Therapy College in Crowborough, East Sussex and hold a BACP Accredited Diploma in Humanistic Creative Counselling.
I offer in-person therapy sessions at my private practise in Tunbridge Wells and also online sessions for UK residents and expats abroad. I am able to offer Walk & Talk therapy which is often preferred by clients who have to sit in an office all day and would rather not sit in a therapy session. Tunbridge Wells is a beautiful part of the UK on the Kent and East Sussex border. Many beautiful parks and forests are nearby, and I have found it to be an area of great peace and tranquillity that suits Walk & Talk therapy very well.
In addition to my private practice, I am a volunteer for Macmillan counselling services, at the East Sussex NHS Trust, supporting cancer patients and their families. I also volunteer for Mid Kent Mind where I work with a number of clients experiencing a broad range of issues such as anxiety, grief, low self-esteem, relationship issues, domestic violence, depression, anger management and abuse.
Member organisations
BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).
Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).
Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.
Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.
All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.
Accredited register membership
The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).
This therapist has indicated that they belong to an Accredited Register.
