Psychological Therapies - MBACP Registered

About me

My name is Gemma and I am a Registered Counsellor and Psychotherapist based in Stoke-on-Trent and Staffordshire.

I am a very experienced counsellor (I have been qualified for 13 years) , who has worked in a variety of services (NHS and voluntary sector). My experience to date has included working with complex adult mental health needs, genral mental health and wellbeing, children and adolescents (aged 4-18) and parenting (Triple P).

I thoroughly enjoy using my skills gained to date to help facilitate the recovery and growth of those experiencing psychological distress. My personal style of counselling/therapy could be described as Integrative, as I use my core person-centred counselling skills to build the therapeutic relationship, and have experience of integrating Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Solution Focussed Therapy into my counselling practice.

I always work collaboratively with my clients, empowering them to lead the therapy and be in control of their process. However, I like to incorporate psychological theories to help my clients to better understand themselves. I have found that this approach has enabled my clients to be empowered to move forward with their presenting concerns, learning skills that they can use in the future to maintain their emotional well-being.

What is different about Sherwin Psychological Therapies?

I complete most of the therapeutic work myself, however I have a team of Associates who work for the organisation and sometimes the outcome of the initial assessment may be to see a different therapist. I have options of male counsellors (if you would prefer this), a qualified Play Therapist and Associate Psychologists. These options can be discussed following initial assessment.

I also offer Supervision to qualified and trainee counsellors. If you are a counsellor, looking for supervision - please check out my supervision page and get in touch to discuss your requirements.

I have counselling rooms in Cellarhead (ST9) suitable for children, young people and adults.

I am now also offering sessions by both telephone and Zoom -  these sessions can be done at a more convenient time for you and you do not need to be in Staffordshire to use my service. This is also ideal
for students away at university or people who work shifts/out of the area.

Personal Experiences

I believe that some of the best counsellors are ones who have experienced what it can be like to struggle with mental health. Professionals are human too, and despite having knowledge of this area we are not immune to our own mental health concerns. I have personally have had times in my life where I have experienced mental health difficulties. I believe that this experience has enabled me to develop an empathy and better understanding of my clients journey. Counselling has been beneficial for me during these times, and has helped me to gain perspective. I was able to achieve a better understanding of my difficulties, and was able challenge myself to do something different. Maybe counselling could work for you too.

Member organisations

BACP

British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.
