Gemma Sherwin Psychological Therapies - MBACP Registered
My name is Gemma and I am a Registered Counsellor and Psychotherapist based in Stoke-on-Trent and the Staffordshire Moorlands.
I am a very experienced counsellor, who has worked in a variety of services (NHS and voluntary sector). My experience to date has included working with complex adult mental health needs, children and adolescents (aged 4-18) and parenting (Triple P).
I thoroughly enjoy using my skills gained to date to help facilitate the recovery and growth of those experiencing psychological distress. My personal style of counselling could be described as Integrative, as I use my core person-centred counselling skills to build the therapeutic relationship and have experience of integrating Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and Solution Focussed Therapy into my counselling practice.
I always work collaboratively with my clients, empowering them to lead the therapy and be in control of their process. However, I like to incorporate psychological theories to help my clients to better understand themselves. I have found that this approach has enabled my clients to be empowered to move forward with their presenting concerns, learning skills that they can use in the future to maintain their emotional well-being.
What is different about Sherwin Psychological Therapies?
I complete most of the therapeutic work myself, however I have a team of Associates who work for the organisation and sometimes the outcome of the initial assessment may be to see a different therapist. I have options of male counsellors (if you would prefer this), a qualified Play Therapist and Associate Psychologists. These options can be discussed following initial assessment.
I also offer Supervision to qualified and trainee counsellors.
I have counselling rooms in Cellarhead (ST9) suitable for children, young people and adults. I also have counselling room available in Newcastle-under-Lyme where I am able to see some adult clients.
I am now also offering sessions by Skype- these sessions can be done at a more convenient time for you and you do not need to be in Staffordshire to use my service. This is also ideal
for students away at university or people who work shifts/out of the area. Skype sessions are £30 per 50 minute session. Please contact me for further information.
I believe that some of the best counsellors are ones who have experienced what it can be like to struggle with mental health. Professionals are human too, and despite having knowledge of this area we are not immune to our own mental health concerns. I have personally have had times in my life where I have experienced mental health difficulties. I believe that this experience has enabled me to develop an empathy and better understanding of my clients journey. Counselling has been beneficial for me during these times, and has helped me to gain perspective. I was able to achieve a better understanding of my difficulties, and was able challenge myself to do something different. Maybe counselling could work for you too.

British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy
BACP is one of the UK’s largest professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy. Therapists registered with the Association fall into a number of different membership categories such as Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP and Registered Member MBACP (Accred), each standing for different levels of training and experience. MBACP (Accred) and MBACP (Snr Accred) members have achieved a substantial level of training and experience approved by the Association.
Registered members can be found on the BACP Register, which was the first register to achieve Accredited Voluntary Register status issued by the Professional Standards Authority. Individual Members will have completed an appropriate counselling and/or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but will not appear on the BACP Register until they've progressed to Registered Member MBACP status.
All members are bound by a Code of Ethics & Practice and a Complaints Procedure. Accredited by the Professional Standards Authority.
