About me
Welcome to Daisy Change Counselling
My name is Gemma Barnfather, and I am a fully qualified Person-Centred Counsellor and a registered member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP). I am fully insured to practice and work within the Ethical Framework provided by the BACP.
I work with both children and adults, offering a safe, supportive, and non-judgemental space to explore challenges and build resilience for clients to lead more fulfilling lives.
I am extremely passionate about mental health and I have worked in highly-intense supporting roles for all of my working life. My experience includes working at Framework, a homeless shelter; volunteering as a Counsellor with Nottinghamshire Women’s Aid; volunteering at Place2Be; spending much time volunteering at a sexual abuse and incest line, working with clients over the telephone. I have also spent over 20+ years in a primary school setting. I am currently working with children and young people in schools and I advocate for children, who are looked after children.
I am dedicated to being part of the solution for mental health and wellbeing. I understand how our struggles can impact every aspect of life and I am committed to working alongside clients to empower and encourage growth, whether for long-term or short-term goals.
Outside of my professional work, I enjoy spending time with my three children, aged 19, 17, and 13, making memories and having fun together. I also love a dog walk!
Training, qualifications & experience
Working with Children and Young People
I have worked with children from the age of 6 years upwards, often as part of early intervention to help build strong foundations for resilience, confidence, and emotional awareness. My person-centred approach allows young people to create their own emotional toolbox, skills and tools that they can create, build, mould and take forward to help navigate their life’s challenges.
I work at each child’s pace and capacity, providing a safe, ethical, and creative space where they can be open and honest. I have supported young people through a range of challenges, including family dynamics, anger, bereavement and loss, relationships, school pressures, social life, online presence, everyday struggles, anxiety, self harm, suicide ideation and worked with children who are finding a diagnosis tricky to navigate.
Being a part of the solution for children and young people's mental wellbeing, is something I am deeply passionate about.
Working with Adults
I work collaboratively with adults to build a trusting relationship and a strong therapeutic alliance. My experiences have allowed me to support people with a wide variety of issues, and I pride myself on welcoming and respecting individuals from all backgrounds, cultures, religions, genders, sexualities, additional needs, and neurodiversity.
I provide a safe, non-judgemental space where clients can feel acknowledged, heard, and free to be their authentic selves. My role is to walk alongside you as you explore ways to reconnect with yourself, realign, and move towards positive change. Alternatively, we can integrate CBT into our work and have more structured sessions.
While I am able to work with past experiences that may still be affecting the present, my focus is on offering the core conditions of person-centred therapy - empathy, acceptance, and authenticity, so that you can experience meaningful change in the here and now and move forward.

Member organisations
BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred). Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA). Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision. Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training. All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.
Accredited register membership
The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).
This therapist has indicated that they belong to an Accredited Register.
