About me

Hello, I'm Gabz  (Gabrielle officially, but everybody calls me Gabz!) I am a warm, friendly and genuine person and I hope these qualities are communicated in my approach to offering counselling and therapy to my clients.

I know there can be a lot of jargon on these pages so I want to break down all the abbreviations. I am a BACP registered therapist, this means that I am a member of the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy. This is a professional body for qualified therapists and also includes an ethical framework that we must abide by at every stage of our work. I also have an MSc (Distinction) in Counselling and Psychotherapy - this means that I have a University Masters Degree in counselling, which is a Level 7 qualification.

At my core I am a person-centred counsellor, which means that I treat every client as an individual. I do not like to use worksheets and tick boxes when I work with my clients. I prefer to work collaboratively and listen to you and what your personal hopes and needs are for therapy. I firmly believe that the relationship between client and therapist is at the centre of a positive therapeutic relationship. As a person centred counsellor I am non-judgemental, empathic and strive to be an anti-oppressive therapist.

I am also able to offer solution focussed therapy if there is a particular problem or issue that you would like to tackle in a more direct approach. Examples of short-term and solution focussed therapy I have offered have helped clients overcome phobias like emetophobia, with some clients we have worked on managing and overcoming anxiety for job interviews, upcoming family events etc and also how to manage and navigate relationships. Short term therapy can be useful when you do not have the time (or the money!) to maintain a longstanding therapeutic relationship and want to work towards a specific goal.

My therapy practice welcomes clients with diverse cultural backgrounds, genders, relationship status' and sexualities. I am an anti-oppressive therapist and hope to make every person who works with me feel heard, valid an welcome. I am not a therapist that will sit and simply nod their head, I like to have back and forth conversation with my clients and will ask questions and challenge where necessary. That is what I seek in a therapist, so what I hope to offer to my clients too.

I promise to always offer warmth and empathy in a confidential and private space - whether that be online via zoom or in person in my therapy room. My therapy room is located at Glebe Farm in Astbury (Congleton) - I am easily accessible from Congleton, Leek, Macclesfield, Stoke-on-Trent, Newcastle and other neighbouring towns. There is ample free parking in the carpark and my office and therapy space is in a converted horses stable nestled amongst the farm across from a yoga studio. There will always be a comfy chair and hot or cold drink of your choice ready for you for your session.

Please do take a look at my instagram to see a little bit more of what I am about too @therapywithgabz and some more pictures of me and my therapy space.

I appreciate it can be difficult reaching out to a therapist for the first time, please know that I look forward to hearing from you and that I offer a free 20 minute initial video call or telephone call so you can decide if I feel like the right therapist for you.

Training, qualifications & experience

BA Hons Degree Drama (Class I) - Liverpool John Moores University

MSc Counselling and Psychotherapy (Distinction) - Keele University

I have some particular areas of experience and interest, including working with menstrual health, menopause, hormone replacement therapy, abortion, post-partum anxiety/depression/stress, pregnancy, baby loss and medical misogyny.

In addition to my counselling work, I am also employed by Keele University on the masters program, teaching students counselling skills and practice and supervising a dissertation group. This role requires an in-depth understanding of theory, concepts, and their application in therapy. This provides me with continual professional development of my practice with my clients and being involved in the most recent counselling research.

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred). Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA). Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision. Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training. All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

Accredited register membership

British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy
Accredited Register Scheme

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).
