About me

Hello, I’m Emma - a qualified counsellor and Registered Member of the BACP, based in Barnstaple, North Devon. I offer a warm, compassionate and down-to-earth space where you can talk openly and begin to make sense of what’s happening for you.

At Elm Counselling, my aim is to provide a safe, supportive and non-judgemental environment where you feel truly heard and accepted. I work from a humanistic and trauma-informed approach, recognising that every person’s experiences and needs are unique. I integrate different therapeutic theories and techniques to support you in a way that feels right for you and at a pace that feels manageable.

I support adults experiencing a range of difficulties including anxiety, depression, trauma, stress, low self-esteem, relationship difficulties and life transitions. I also offer support for neurodivergent clients and family members wanting to better understand neurodiversity and its impact on wellbeing and relationships.

I believe counselling can offer the space to pause, reflect and reconnect with yourself. Together, we can explore your experiences, increase self-awareness, build emotional resilience and help you move towards greater balance, confidence and authenticity in your life.

I offer online counselling and face-to-face sessions in Barnstaple, North Devon.

Training, qualifications & experience

  • Level 4 Diploma in Therapeutic Counselling (Humanistic-Integrative)
  • Currently completing a Level 5 Diploma in Trauma-Informed Counselling
  • Registered Member of the BACP and committed to working within their ethical framework
  • Ongoing professional development and regular clinical supervision

Alongside my private practice, I volunteer with a domestic abuse charity supporting adults experiencing challenges including trauma, anxiety, depression, low self-esteem and relationship difficulties. This experience has strengthened my understanding of the impact trauma can have on emotional wellbeing and relationships and the importance of feeling safe, heard and supported within therapy.

Before becoming a counsellor, I spent 10 years working within family and criminal law, supporting individuals through complex and often distressing circumstances. This background has given me a deep understanding of how relationships, life events and systems can affect emotional wellbeing and mental health.

My approach is warm, relational and trauma-informed and I aim to create a calm and supportive therapeutic space where clients feel able to explore their thoughts and emotions without judgement.

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred). Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA). Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision. Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training. All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.
