About me

"Now that I say it…”

Hi, I’m Emily.
Welcome to the world of counselling, and welcome back if you’ve been here before. The idea of counselling may feel overwhelming or confusing and I am happy to help with that.

I consider our work a privilege, meeting you where you’re at and seeking to understand things from your unique experience.

How it works
Firstly, we can have a free 30 minute consultation where we can get to know each other, build a bit of a picture, and see if I am the right counsellor for you. This is also an opportunity for you to ask any questions.

After this initial consultation, sessions last 50 minutes and are weekly.

How we'd work
I am what is known as an integrative counsellor. This means our work will draw on a variety of counselling modalities and techniques. At my core I practice Gestalt therapy. This is a relational approach that works in the ‘here and now’ with key elements including:

  • raising awareness
  • recognising what blocks us from where we’d like to be
  • and allowing all parts of ourselves to be seen and accepted

This approach also considers the physical responses we have and how our body may be linked to our thoughts and feelings as well.

Ultimately, I believe the relationship is the most important part of the therapeutic process. Our sessions would be client-lead whilst also bringing my authentic self to the relationship as well.

Training, qualifications & experience

My experience
Whilst I am trained to work with a variety of everyday life and mental health problems, there are some I have exceptionally extensive experience in such as anxiety and depression, stress, self-esteem, struggles with faith, and loss.

A particular area to note is my experience working with anxiety and depression. I understand how they often come together to create a sense of overwhelm and numbness at the same time.

My training is also supported by many years of working with children and teenagers which gives me insight into the lives of young people as well the families around them, however that looks for you.

I have lived and worked in a diverse area for most of my life and so have experienced the cross-section of the UKs demographic. With this in mind, I will always endeavour to understand your own unique experience as well.

Training & Qualifications

  • I have a Level 4 Diploma in Integrative Counselling and am working towards my BACP accreditation.
  • I have completed up-to-date safeguarding training and hold an enhanced DBS.
  • I have almost 10 years of experience working with under-18s.
  • I am a Mental Health First Aider.
  • I always undergoing CPD and have recently studied IFS and faith, and ADHD.

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred). Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA). Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision. Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training. All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

ACC
Association of Christians in Counselling and Linked Professions (ACC)

The Association of Christians in Counselling and Linked Professions (ACC) is a Christian professional membership organisation for those involved in counselling/psychotherapy and linked professions, i.e. pastoral care, coaching and spiritual direction, in the UK. The organisation is made up of various different membership categories, including Counsellor and Accredited, and requires all members working as counsellors to undertake Continuous Professional Development on a regular basis.
