About me

You might be functioning on the outside but feeling stuck, anxious, self-critical, disconnected, or caught in familiar patterns. Therapy can offer a space to slow things down, understand what is happening underneath, and begin making changes that feel realistic and lasting.

I’m David, a BACP Accredited Psychotherapist based in Beckenham. I offer individual counselling for adults experiencing low mood, anxiety, stress, self-esteem difficulties and relationship challenges, both in person and online.

Many of the people I work with come to therapy not only because they want relief from difficult feelings, but because they want to understand themselves more clearly. You may find yourself reacting in ways you do not fully understand, struggling to say what you need, feeling overwhelmed by emotions, or noticing the same patterns showing up in your relationships, work, or sense of yourself.

My approach is calm, thoughtful and collaborative. I draw on Transactional Analysis, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), and Person-Centred principles, which means we can explore both what is happening in your life now and the deeper patterns that may be shaping how you think, feel and relate.

Therapy with me is not about being told what to do or trying to “get it right”. It is a shared process that develops over time, some sessions may feel reflective and exploratory; others may be more practical. We can work together at a pace that feels manageable for you.

I tend to work particularly well with clients who are curious about their inner world and interested in understanding why they respond the way they do. This might include exploring anxiety, low mood, stress, anger, people-pleasing, relationship difficulties, confidence, self-esteem, or the impact of earlier experiences.

I have experience working in NHS, voluntary and private practice settings, supporting adults with a range of emotional and relational difficulties. I offer a safe, confidential and non-judgemental space where you can talk openly and begin to make sense of what has been feeling difficult.

I also write articles exploring themes such as anxiety, low mood, emotional resilience, self-esteem and relationships. If you would like to learn more about how I work, you are welcome to read them in the Articles section of my website.

In-person sessions are held in Beckenham, and online sessions take place via Zoom.

If you would like to get a feel for whether we might work well together, you are welcome to get in touch to arrange a free 15-minute phone consultation. You can email me using the button above, call or text me, or visit my website for more information.

Being registered/accredited with a professional body means an individual must have achieved a substantial level of training and experience approved by their member organisation.

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred). Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA). Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision. Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training. All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Additional information

My standard fee is £70 per 50-minute session. I currently have a small number of reduced-fee spaces available at £60 for clients where cost would otherwise make therapy difficult to access.

I offer sessions Monday to Friday during the day, with the option of working in person or online.

In-person sessions are held in Beckenham, and online sessions take place via Zoom.

The first step is usually a free 15-minute phone consultation. This gives us a chance to briefly talk about what is bringing you to therapy, what you may be looking for, and whether working together feels like the right fit.

If the time you are looking for is not currently listed, you are welcome to get in touch. I sometimes have short-notice availability and can also keep a waiting list for clients who would like to start when a space opens.
