About me
I am a psychotherapist based in East Sussex, UK, who specialises in complex trauma. I'm the author of Heal Your Trauma: How to Overcome a Painful Childhood to Become Happy and Whole Again. As an Advanced Accredited Schema Therapist, Trainer & Supervisor and Internal Family Systems Therapist I combine schema therapy, as well as internal family systems, compassion-focused therapy and somatic therapies into my integrative approach. I am a long-term meditator and student of Buddhism, so I also weave in ideas from Buddhist psychology, because this 2,500-year-old tradition offers such rich, wise insights into what causes suffering and how to relieve it. I specialise in helping people with the impact of childhood trauma, but work with a wide range of psychological problems. My practice is online, so I work with clients and supervisees all over the world via Zoom.
I am also a meditation teacher for Insight Timer, where you will find a wealth of resources (mostly free/donation-based) including courses, breathing techniques, guided imagery, mindfulness and self-compassion practices and much more. If you are struggling with your mental health – and especially if you have experienced trauma – practices like these are a crucial part of your healing journey, whether you are also having therapy or not.
I teach webinars and workshops for people struggling with their mental health, as well as writing my blog, which you can read on this site – sign up using the form below to get my latest posts delivered straight to your inbox. It provides a huge amount of free information about all aspects of psychology, psychotherapy, mental health and wellbeing.
I also provide supervision and training for mental-health professionals – teaching counsellors, psychotherapists and psychologists how to incorporate parts-based, trauma-informed theory and techniques into their practice.
I can help with a wide range of issues including complex trauma, depression, problems with panic and anxiety, difficulties in relationships or with parenting, personality problems, substance abuse, addiction and eating disorders.
Training, qualifications & experience
Before specialising in first cognitive therapy, then schema therapy and later internal family systems therapy, I initially trained as a counsellor, with a three-year counselling diploma at the Psychosynthesis Trust, followed by a one-year Foundation Certificate in Psychotherapy & Counselling at Regent's University. I later added a Certificate in Cognitive-Behavioural Coaching from the Centre for Coaching. This style of coaching is based on cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT) and was my introduction to cognitive therapy.
I later completed courses in stress management, assertiveness training and a Certificate in Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy from the Centre for Stress Management; and a Master Practitioner Diploma in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy from SDS Seminars Ltd. All of these courses are approved by the British Psychological Society. I practised CBT from 2010 to 2017.
For many years I specialised in schema therapy, a longer-term approach than standard CBT which is designed to help people with longstanding or hard-to-treat problems. It will be helpful if you have tried other approaches but nothing has worked; or your problems are very wide-ranging, affecting your work, relationships or family life. I practised schema therapy from 2015 onwards and achieved accreditation as a schema therapist in 2017.
I completed my schema therapy training with Schema Therapy Associates and am an Advanced Accredited Schema Therapist, Trainer & Supervisor, accredited by the International Society of Schema Therapy (ISST).
In recent years, I have come to specialise in internal family systems (IFS) therapy and am an Internal Family Systems Therapist, having completed Level 3 training with IFS Training UK. I increasingly use IFS techniques and ways of understanding psychological problems with my clients, as IFS is such a warm, compassionate and powerful approach to helping people with their mental health.
And I am a Certified Clinical Trauma Professional, and a Complex Trauma Treatment Professional, accredited by the International Association of Trauma Professionals, having trained in trauma-informed stabilisation treatment with Janina Fisher, one of the world’s leading experts on psychological trauma.
I am a Registered Member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP).
I have completed a number of training courses in compassion-focused therapy including Introductory and Advanced Skills in Compassion Focused Therapy, as well as Compassion Focused Therapy for Depression, with CFT's founder Paul Gilbert. CFT combines a number of approaches, including evolutionary psychology, cognitive therapy, mindfulness and compassion-building exercises from Tibetan Buddhism. I use a number of these techniques to help my clients be kinder and more compassionate to themselves.
I also have a strong personal and professional interest in mindfulness meditation, especially mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT). I have maintained a daily meditation practice for a number of years and use mindfulness techniques with many of my clients, as they are so helpful for a wide range of problems.
Member organisations
BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred). Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA). Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision. Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training. All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.
Accredited register membership
The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).
This therapist has indicated that they belong to an Accredited Register.
