About me

Welcome. I am a qualified counsellor and psychologist with years of experience working with individuals and groups. Apart from counselling, I have over 20 years' experience of university teaching and research in psychology, which has enriched my practice. I specialise in cultural stress, identity, sexuality and men's issues. I can help with relationships, personality, anxiety, self-esteem, and existential crisis.

My therapeutic approach draws from gestalt therapy, which works creatively to support different ways of experiencing and understanding yourself and your lifeworld. I facilitate this within a gentle, supportive environment, and a respectful, ethical therapeutic relationship. As a professional psychologist my practice is informed by contemporary research, and a pluralistic understanding of the mind and brain and philosophy and spirituality. I graduated from Oxford with a degree in Psychology, Philosophy and Physiology.

No matter what has brought you here to read this, you have already made the first step. You have reached the shoreline, boundary between known and unknown. Counselling gives a space and a structure to continue.

Training, qualifications & experience

I have lived in southern and northern England and now in Scotland. As British Chinese I have a bicultural and bilingual background with working class roots. As a result, I have a special sensitivity to matters of class, culture and personal history. After short spells working in catering, sales, and financial sectors, I did my Doctorate in Psychology and have lectured in the subject for 25 years.

Alongside a four-year training in gestalt therapy, informed by East Asian holistic philosophy, I worked part-time in two counselling agencies for eight years. I hold a Postgraduate Diploma in Gestalt Therapy, a nine-day postgraduate training in Body Process Psychotherapy, and have completed several professional trainings, including in dreamwork, psychodynamic approaches, sexual addictions, and equality and diversity awareness. I have run fixed duration and ongoing groups for men.

As a registered member of the BACP I practise within their ethical framework, which includes minimum levels of supervision and continuing professional development. I offer counselling and psychotherapy in central Edinburgh, at the Edinburgh Gestalt Institute at 51 Lothian Road.
