About me

Welcome. I am a qualified counsellor and chartered psychologist with years of experience working with individuals and groups. I offer counselling and psychotherapy, online or in person, in Edinburgh and Southampton. Apart from counselling, I have over 27 years' experience of university teaching and research in psychology, which has enriched my practice. I can help with relationships, personality issues, cultural adjustment, anxiety, identity, emotions, gender, bereavement, behavioural difficulties, stress, sexuality, self-esteem, life transitions, and existential crisis.

I have lived in southern and northern England and am now based in Scotland and Hampshire. I graduated from Oxford with a degree in Psychology, Philosophy and Physiology. After short spells in catering, sales, and financial sectors, I did my doctorate in Psychology and lectured in the subject for 27 years. I have worked with men's development and male psychology.

No matter what has brought you here, you have already begun. You have reached the shoreline, boundary between known and unknown. Counselling gives a space and a structure to continue. Psychotherapy, if desired, is the other shore.

Training, qualifications & experience

After a four-year training in Gestalt Therapy, informed by Psychology, Existentialism, and East Asian philosophy, I practised in two counselling agencies before setting-up private practice. I hold a Postgraduate Diploma in Gestalt Therapy, a postgraduate training in Body Process Psychotherapy, and have completed professional trainings in Dreamwork, Psychodynamic psychotherapy, Sexuality, Addiction, Bereavement, Childhood trauma, Men's issues, Intercultural counselling, Couples counselling, and Equality and diversity, among others. I have led fixed duration and ongoing development groups for men.

As a registered member of the BACP, I practise within their ethical framework, which includes minimum levels of supervision and continuing professional development.

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred). Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA). Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision. Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training. All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

Accredited register membership

British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy
Accredited Register Scheme

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

This therapist has indicated that they belong to an Accredited Register.
