About me

In looking for a counsellor, you’ve already taken a major step towards a healthier, happier life, and that should not be underestimated. I recognise how daunting counselling can be for many people, and that’s why I strive to provide a client-focused, non-judgemental practice, where you are the one who directs what we address and at what pace.

From a working class background in North East England, I know how many potential barriers you may face in seeking therapy, so I work to be flexible to support your needs. I work face-to-face, over video calls, and on the telephone, whatever suits you best. Having trained in a wide range of counselling techniques and with hundreds of client hours, I'm able to adapt my methods to suit your individual needs and preferences.

Whether you're seeking solutions for an immediate problem or wish to explore deeper patterns in your life, we'll collaborate to find a path that feels right for you. We can start by discussing what you hope to gain from counselling, and we can explore the best options to support you. You won't be pushed, led, or cajoled. You will never be under pressure to discuss anything you don't want to. First and foremost, a counsellor's job is to listen with empathy and understanding. Whether you're seeking a sounding board for difficult emotions, a partner in problem-solving, or simply a non-judgmental presence, I am here to support you in the way that feels most comfortable and beneficial.

Maybe you are feeling anxiety, or you would like to address or change a habit. You may be worried that you have fallen into a depression, maybe you are unsure how to deal with a recent diagnosis such as ADHD or ADD. We can discuss all of this and make it clearer and more manageable.

If you don’t mind a metaphor, I sometimes describe my job to clients like this:

Maybe your head has become like that junk drawer in the kitchen, all muddled and messy - you know there are useful things in there, but it’s become too entangled and difficult to access them. We can, together, pull it all out, set it on the table, and begin to work through it, so the things in there become accessible and useful again. The key thing is that we do this together, you are the expert on what’s in there, and I’m here to help you make sense of it.

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred). Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA). Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision. Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training. All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.
