About me

Welcome, my name is Allene and I am here to help and support you.

I believe psychotherapy & / or counselling can provide a wonderful opportunity for us to gain understanding and relief from issues that are causing us distress. We can discover the causes which have led to our difficulties, gaining clarity and the necessary skills and understanding for a happier, more positive and fulfilling life.

I offer a calm, confidential and safe environment where you can explore with me what has brought you to therapy. Please feel free to call or email me and I will answer any questions you may have, with no obligation.

As a retired midwife and general nurse, I have seen how this offers depth to my practice and I am a highly experienced Integrative Cognitive Behavioural Therapist, a member of British Association of Behavioural Cognitive Psychotherapists and abide by their codes of ethics & practice. A copy of this document is available from me on request.

As an experienced Cognitive Behavioural Psychotherapist (CBT) I am accredited with the BABCP (British Association Behavioural Cognitive Psychotherapies) I am also trained in Cognitive Behavioural Analytical Systems Psychotherapy (an excellent therapy for the treatment of chronic depression) If you are a counsellor/psychotherapist either qualified or in training, I hold the COSCA Counselling Supervision certificate and offer counselling supervision.

I am a CBT teacher & trainer and a Jungian Psychoanalytical SandPlay Therapist.

Training, qualifications & experience

I originally trained and worked as a general nurse and then as a midwife, and for the last 18 years I have been practising as a counsellor/psychotherapist.

My undergraduate degree is in Applied Women's Studies, with my electives in Psychology & Counselling. I hold a Masters in Counselling Studies which provides me with the skill base to offer my clients a more Integrative approach. This means I am able to tailor the method of counselling to your needs as I have found 'One Size' does not always fit all.

I have a Diploma in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy & Group Work and am COSCA certified counselling supervisor. I am trained in Cognitive Behavioural Analytical Systems Psychotherapy (CBASP) which research shows is very helpful for chronic depression. I am a qualified in Sand Tray Therapist (a Jungian Psychoanalytical approach) I am happy to explain in more detail this creative and fascinating model of therapy on request and how you can access this.

Over the years I have gained specific experience around women & family issues, depression, anxiety & crisis work and have worked in a rape crisis & sexual abuse centre, with both male and female clients. I have gained invaluable experience around the latter and it's potential life time repercussions.

I can provide Dialectical Behavioural Therapy, with its strong Mindfulness component. This is particularly useful for those diagnosed with certain types of anxiety-based disorders and is helpful for alleviating distressing symptoms and in working with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.

Having lived overseas for many years, I have additional experience in relocating with families and the pressures and unique challenges involved around issues of loss, change & relocation.

I meet my clients in my private office in the centre of Dumfries. It is close to major bus routes and there is plenty of free parking available.
