About me
My name is Alex Gatehouse, and I am a fully qualified Humanistic Psychotherapeutic Counsellor. I offer counselling to adults, both in-person at HQ Therapy Rooms in Haggerston and online.
It’s a proven fact that, at some point in most of our lives, we will face challenges that throw us off balance and may require some support. This is not a sign of weakness or madness - it’s simply part of being human.
There are many reasons you might be seeking therapy. You could be grappling with the lasting effects of deep trauma and need support with self-regulation. Perhaps you’re curious about understanding yourself better - why you find yourself repeating certain patterns in your relationships or life.
You may have recently experienced a loss, whether it’s the end of a job or the passing of someone close to you. Or, you might have developed coping mechanisms in the past that once kept you safe but no longer serve you in the way they once did.
As a Humanistic therapist, I believe deeply in the power of the therapeutic relationship as a reflection of how relationships have influenced your life outside the therapy room. Through support, acceptance, and gentle challenge, we can explore ways for you to feel less stuck and unlock a broader range of choices and possibilities.
I have experience working with clients on a wide range of issues, including anxiety, depression, abuse, grief and bereavement, attachment, suicidal ideation, work-related stress, trauma, displacement, chronic pain and fatigue, and relationship difficulties.
Training, qualifications & experience
I hold a diploma in Psychotherapeutic Counselling from the Metanoia Institute and am a member of the BACP, whose code of ethics I am bound by and underpins my work as a counsellor. Before private practice, I offered therapy in three different placement settings, including the Centre for Better Health in Hackney. I now offer private practice at HQ Therapy rooms in Haggerston.
Member organisations
BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred). Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA). Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision. Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training. All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.
Accredited register membership
The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).
This therapist has indicated that they belong to an Accredited Register.

Further information
In a previous chapter of my life, I spent 17 years as an actor, and I bring the insights and training from that experience into my work as a therapist. Having worked in the demanding and often unpredictable world of freelance artistry, I have a deep understanding of the unique pressures and stresses that come with it.
