About me

Hi! Thanks for joining me.

Who I am

I'm Alannah (she/they), a cis-female therapist from Yorkshire. My business 'Skye Therapy' was born out of the idea of the sky being limitless. The blue sky always being present and striving to find it, despite the rain and cloud that might cover it. Coming from a lived experience perspective, It is my aim to bring this hope to my clients, that everyone has the potential to change if they are they are given the encouragement and support to do that, and it’s my intention to walk that path with you every step of the way. I believe in connecting through authenticity and the truth of human experience, two people together navigating the struggles you might be facing.

My therapy style

The therapy I provide is centred around staying with you in the deepest, darkest and most emotional times. My job is to stay with you during these experiences whilst we collectively navigate them together, whilst I bring awareness to some of the things that might be unseen or emotions that might be presenting. The work I do is humanistic, which looks at you as a whole person, emotionally, spiritually and as a sum of all your experiences. This can be done creatively or through using breath and body-based techniques to delve into what has happened to you and how this might impact how you relate to others. My practice is relational, which means the relationship between myself and you is the most important starting point, so we can explore your experiences safely and in a supportive way. We will use this as a foundation to also explore your relationship with others, to try and bring about more self understanding, acceptance and healing.

What to expect from our sessions

Our sessions will be led by you, whilst we explore your current situation, along with the past experiences you feel have shaped you into who you are. I provide a combination of talking and creative techniques, to suit you and your preferred communication style. I also offer both long term and short term work to suit your needs. Although the work we do is led by you, at times we can explore techniques to help with regulation and symptom management. This may be the starting process in our journey in navigating support that is safe and specific to your needs. I believe in genuine, human connection and that this has the potential to be healing and bring about true change through deep sharing. The therapy I provide is honest and doesn't hide. I bring my whole self to the experience and may use my own body to communicate unseen feelings which may be surfacing within the therapy room, to help foster further self understanding and healing.

Training, qualifications & experience

Level 2 in Counselling, Level 3 in Counselling, Postgraduate Diploma in Counselling and Psychotherapy.

I have worked extensively within both and women's and men's services in the third sector, providing support for victim-survivors of domestic and sexual violence, as well as trauma-focused work. Throughout this work, I have supported people through a range of issues, such as bereavement, childhood trauma, SA, menopause and other gynaecological issues.

My other training consists of mental health crisis work, so I am well-versed in supporting those who experience suicidal or self harm thoughts. This is met with understanding, rather than judgement or shame.

Having AuDHD and being part of the LGBTQ+ community, I feel a personal and professional responsibility to provide a practice that is inclusive, safe and non-judgemental. Inclusivity and accessibility underpins my whole practice, combining both my personal and professional experience to support people through issues experienced as a result of their neurodivergence and issues experienced due to being part of the LGBTQ+ community. None of these measures are corrective, but framed in a way to affirm authentically who you are and to help navigate that.

My practice is shaped around my own personal and professional experience. I have a keen interest in mindfulness, breath work and body-based practices as a way to process emotion. Techniques are evidence based and trauma-informed and can be shared for difficulties with regulation or symptom management. It is my belief that emotions get stuck in the body if we have no space to release them, so I exhibit a particular focus on emotional exploration and the ability to touch those emotions again fully. This can be through somatic, body-based work, where we bring awareness to these different parts of the body.

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred). Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA). Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision. Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training. All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

Accredited register membership

British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).
