What types of counselling are available?

There are many ways in which you can receive counselling. There's no wrong or right way - it's whichever feels the most comfortable for you.

The most traditional setting for counselling is face-to-face. This usually takes place in a space provided by the counsellor, sometimes in their home, or in a room they use in another building. This provides a safe environment that is (hopefully) free from distractions. The rooms are usually decorated in a calm fashion to help people feel at ease and you'll be there for a 50-minute session.

Walking therapy involves being with nature whilst you talk. It's usually a short walk followed by a sit-down. The counsellor will endeavour to keep your privacy by stopping talking when others walk by. Walking therapy can provide a much-needed break from the busyness of everyday life.

Can you receive counselling over the phone?

Yes, you can! Many people prefer (especially in recent times) to have their counselling sessions over the phone. This can be for a number of reasons. They may find it difficult to find a counsellor nearby that they feel comfortable with or maybe it's an issue with accessibility. Some people feel that they can disclose more on a phone call as they have a feeling of anonymity. A phone call can take up a lot less time than travelling to a counsellor's place of practice and it also avoids other costs, such as petrol or bus fare.

The most important aspect when it comes to remote counselling is that you are in a space that you feel is confidential and nobody can overhear you. When we think that another person can hear what we are talking about, it can stop us from talking freely. So try your best to pick a time when nobody else is in the house or a place that you are sure is private.

Online counselling offers several valuable benefits for mental health support:

Accessibility

Online counselling breaks down geographical barriers. You can access therapy from the comfort of your home, making it easier for people in rural areas or those with mobility issues to receive help.

Convenience

It's incredibly convenient. You can schedule sessions that fit your daily routine, reducing the need to take time off work or commute to a physical location.

Privacy and comfort

Many individuals find it more comfortable to open up and share their feelings in a familiar environment. Online counselling allows you to choose a space where you feel secure and at ease.

Reduced stigma

The perceived stigma associated with seeking mental health support can be lessened when therapy is conducted online. This can encourage more people to seek help when they need it.

Cost-efficiency

Online counselling can be more cost-effective. You save on transportation expenses, and some online platforms offer more affordable therapy options.

Consistency

Regular therapy is crucial for progress. With online counselling, it's easier to maintain consistent appointments, reducing disruptions to your treatment plan.

Environmental impact

By eliminating the need for travel, online counselling can be more environmentally friendly, reducing carbon emissions associated with commuting.

Overall, online counselling offers a flexible, accessible, and confidential way to prioritise your mental health. It can empower you to seek the support you need to navigate life's challenges and work towards emotional well-being. Get in touch today to arrange your counselling sessions.
